I have a 2000 2-dr Cavalier. I get abt 27-30 mpg.

Although I'd much rather have a 65 Volvo 122s Amazon.

Yeah, I first drove one as a rental (the rental company was out of sensible ones, so they gave me a 'stang for the same price) and fell in love

This... proccess does incredible damage to cars, so much that most all vehicles must be discarded soon in the vicinity of their tenth year due to corrosion unless one has the means to wash vehicles after each use. Heh! Try that at -35C!
They salt the roads here. But generally, it's only a few times each winter. We generally take our car to a carwash after a longer cold spell (when they had to salt a few days after each other). But mostly the bottom of the car. But the car doesn't suffer too much, it's the window cleaner liquid that must be filled every other day!

In the UK, yes, absolutely. They spray a mixture of salt and sand onto the major roads overnight whenever it's below zero.

Most modern cars sold in the UK have extremely good anti-corrosion coatings which withstand it pretty well. In the "old days", before such coatings were developed, it used to be a major problem.

There's absolutely no point in putting salt on the roads at -35C . The reason they do it is that a mixture of salt and water has a much lower freezing point than water alone, so it stops ice forming, but it only lowers the freezing point down to about -15C, so if it's colder than that (which it almost never is in the UK) it doesn't work.

But WHEN I win the Lotto, I won't buy a car. I'll treat myself to a Harley Davidson....Yeah. Hey I can dream can't I?

I'd get a new car... Again a Toyota, but the Auris. A bit larger than our current car but not too large. I've no use for a big car.

Here it still is a problem and we have to get additional corrosion treatment. The usually reliable undercarriage parts like brake lines, fuel lines, gas tanks suffer and last fewer than than 10 years.
Most people forego rust prevention treatments because they never plan on using their vehicles more than 5 years. That creates serious failure danger from older vehicles on the roads.

I agree. City engineers here don't bother with thermometers. Spread, spread, spread!
When I was a kid, there was no salt spreading, they used coarse sands. but not any more.

I drive a 2000 Hyundai Tiburon, a nice, sporty 28-30+ MPG hatchback. For years, my car was a motorcycle, a better commuting vehicle as far as I was concerned. But when I started taking the train to work, I sold the bike (which, having a very polluting power plant as most bikes do, Harleys included, did not bother me too much).

Right now the 10-year-old shark is running great, so I'm hoping I can get it to last long enough to see the real next generation of cars on the roads (IOW, beyond the "first-gen electric-assisted gas engine" barely-hybrids of today and into full electrics, next-gen hybrids, new configurations like the Persu, etc).
