The problem, etherspin, is that you appear to be conflating preference with moral imperative. Some things are moral imperatives, but not everything is.

If I were in China and were offered cat, I would decline to eat it. But I wouldn't lecture those who do about their preference being wrong or mine being morally superior; doing so would be rude and obnoxious. If someone wants to add beef, pork, chicken and fish to the list of things they prefer not to eat, that's fine with me. But if they proceed to lecture me about my preference being wrong or theirs being morally superior, they would then be rude and obnoxious. That's the sort of thing that this thread is about. (And, by the way, let me make it clear that most vegetarians I know are not like that.)

This is but one symptom of a larger problem that is awfully common, the notion that "everybody should be just like me". I find it annoying to listen to people who insist that I should not only eat what they prefer to eat, but drive the same kind of car they prefer to drive, watch the same TV shows they prefer to watch, listen to the same music they prefer to listen to, etc.

Oh, and use the same e-book reader they prefer to use.

No - I actually do understand the difference - in fact someone else just a few posts above here reenforced the ethical concern of cat consumption, you may only regard it as a preference or taste but many have a strong moral objection to it , as I've stated before, most omnivores in western countries will decry cat, dog, whale consumption etc and the only thing stopping them voicing their objection to it while in a foreign country is intimidation.

I most definately dont think everyone should be like me, just that if my ethics are gonna be mocked i'll be the first one to fish for plotholes (unintended pun!) in others ethics.

Just a clarification: I didn't intend that as a reference to you, rather a general observation about an attitude many people seem to have. My apologies if I failed to express that properly.

Hey! Get back off topic! We stopped talking about veggie vs meaty several pages ago. Right now, we should be discussing breakfast and the pancakes therein.

I once read an amusing quote that in effect stated that activists are quick to protest the wearing of fur coats but not leather jackets because it is safer to intimidate rich old ladies than it is to intimidate motorcycle gangs.

I can honestly say I've never experienced a vegetarian giving an omnivore grief over eating meat. I have however personally experienced the opposite. Some people get prickly and defensive when they find out there's a vegetarian around. I've had people I barely know come up to me and bother me about not eating meat.

The worst though, and I say this with no malice, are the no-carb Atkins types. The one's I've met have been weirdly confrontational.

That's because with all of the meat and cheese, they are hungry and constipated, all at the same time! And have kidney problems, so it hurts when they pee. They are furious because nothing good is either going in nor coming out!

how would someone you barely know know enough about your dietary habits to give you grief over your choices? one of my cousins was vegie for years and I didn't know until Thanksgiving was at my house

Word gets around fast in the workplace, people gossip, especially if someone is even slightly "different." When you work with people every day, and eat with them, dietary choices just come up naturally.

EDIT: I should add that I was a liberal, agnostic, veg in a very conservative, blue-collar establishment, so I sort of stood out.
