Are you sure DX can crop PDFs? I thought I read somewhere it can't.

taken from the kindleDX user guide:

Kindle DX can display a PDF document without losing the formatting of the original file. (You cannot change the text size on menus, in PDF
files, or on Kindle screens, such as the Home screen or the Kindle Store.)
So the DX does not adjust the text size like however the DR can. it is not the problem of cropping the white margins.

Quote:
I tried it with the openfile on the DR and really there is no comparison. The DX is much snappier and the refresh rate is much quicker using the identical pdf's. The DR occasionally turns pages quickly but has that pop-up often that say's I believe "please wait", the DX doesn't hesitate like that even when clicking the button many times in a row.
Looks like a very useful advantage of the DX. Sorry for this, it is just from yesterday in rfog's thread, I pay attention to the speed of turning pages. So how long usually does the DR turn page? one second, two second or more....I know this will depend on what the PDF contains, but here I mean usually, because you use 'occasionally', which means it usually is slow. But how slow???

Page turn speed is in relation to PDF size. Until 20 MB or so and complex ones (Scientific American, Circuit Cellar), is abour one second, if page has a lot of graphics perhaps a little more. DR page turinig is more regular if you do not get the "please wait" message.

It doesn't matter how big a PDF file is. I have 100MB+ PDFs and they're as fast as 1MB ones.

Amazon DX.

However, as most complex, as slower turning page. From Scientific American and Cirtuit Cellar both turn pages more or less at same speed. However, iRex DR1000 is sensibly slower loading.

I don't believe it has anything to do with the size of the PDF file itself. It's based on the complexity/type of the data on each page.

There are large PDF files that turn very quickly and there are small PDF files with complex content that can turn slowly. It all has to do with how much time it takes the DR to render the next page in memory.

I believe it also caches the next page automatically while you are looking at the current one. So, if you flip pages quickly it may not have enough time to cache them. But if you spend longer reading a page before you flip, the turn may be faster. The "please wait" that you see means that it hasn't finished rendering/caching the next page yet (you turned before it was ready).

There are threads on here with various tips for optimizing a PDF file so that the DR can render/cache it more quickly.

Unfortunately, I don't have a list of them. You should be able to read through the titles of the threads in the DR forum on here and over on iRex's forum and find them.
