Let us not jump to conclusions, please. We don't know that Bookeen are dropping Mobi support and, even if they do, it will not affect any current devices, so nobody will "lose access" to their eBooks.

I really doubt they are going to drop mobipocket support. It would make too many loyal customers (who spent hundreds or even thouthands of euros on mobipocket ebooks over the last two years) angry.

Okay, so can I have some definitive advice here please. Should I order my Cybook today? It doesn't really matter if I order it today or in two months because I won't receive it either way until July when my relative comes from the UK. (Can't have it sent direct here because the import duty I'd have to pay would be higher than the price of the Cybook). If I order it today, I would have .prc support regardless of whether or not the rumours are true. Then I just wouldn't upgrade the firmware when a new version is ready.
Opinions please. --JanG. |

However, I would advice and wait. No one knows whether mobipocket support is going to be dropped. Wait untill they announce the new firmware update. |

To be honest, I'd advise you to wait for those two months.
There's so much speculation out there - which could easily been put aside, if Bookeen would finally communicate with their customers (the readers are listening) - that one simply cannot tell what the new firmware will look like or which implications it will have. Besides, the price may even be a bit lower in two months ... |

- folder support - a functioning DEL-button - customizable buttons at all to name just a few? Features which should not force any decision on the customers pro or con prc/epub. Last edited by K-Thom; 04-29-2009 at 05:32 AM. |

In that case I'd advise waiting. You're obvously competant technically, and re-converting from .lit to ePUB will be easy if it becomes necessary.
July is three months away, and anything could happen before then - even the launch of a reader you'd prefer to the CyBook. If you're relying on someone to bring the ebook to you I'd suggest keeping a close eye on stock levels at your preferred supplier (I'd suggest WH Smiths). You don't want to leave the order so late that it doesn't arrive in time. Quote:

Rumour has it that BeBook will soon support DRM ePub in one of their firmware updates. I'll believe it when I see it, but if it should happen I believe it (or them, meaning Hanlin V3 clones) will be the first eReader to support multiple DRM formats.
Which seems to go against the restrictive practices currently imposed, such as the exclusivity agreement Mobipocket requires before allowing DRM Mobi support on a reader - but that's a good (great!) thing. Could be the first step towards having readers supporting multiple secure formats, meaning consumers can actually have some freedom of choice when these scumbag publishers do their back-deals and agree to only release eBook in a specific format. Also, if BeBook / Hanlin / Jinke / lBook are doing this, then surely CyBook coulod also support both Mobi and ePub, rather than the either/or situation this thread fears. Granted, the spec page seems to have dropped Mobi and included ePub, but here's hoping they aren't actually the bastards we assume they are. I guess it's "Hope for the best, prepare for the worst." ![]() |
