Look at the very last page where it lists "Power"

Yeah, I'm not seeing any "abandonment." It's not like they switched to an incompatible format or DRM scheme.

I am not sure what all of the fuss is about. I am a power reader reading 2 books or more a week. I have never needed my SD card slot... ever. You can always re-download books you own so why would you want to store 1500 books on the device??? And folders would be nice but it's hardly a deal breaker. Sony didn't have folders for the 500 and I dealt with that. In fact once they did come out with them I hardly used them to do more than organize by author.

I have 500 books on my Kindle right now. Twelve of them are from Amazon (and thus re-downloadable).

This is why I have said many time Amazon should allow you to upload to your media library. I would pay for this feature. Much better than an SD care in my opinion if this would happen.

I'm surprised Amazon doesn't have a supply of Kindle IIs to ship NOW instead of waiting until the 24th....or whenever

This, from the article on Ars Technica, disturbs me greatly:

Quote:
Early in the talk, Bezos dropped a hint that the introduction would be about more than just Amazon's own hardware, when he mentioned a feature called "whisper sync," which will keep track of what users are reading and where they are within the content across different devices—"Kindle 1, Kindle 2, and other mobile devices...
I don't know about others, but I read a lot of non-Amazon content on my K1. I've used it more than I thought I would (more than the Sony 505).

But I am so not keen on them tracking what I'm reading. That's just... creepy.

the last page of the manual says replaceable...not user replaceable. Maybe you have to send it into Amazon to get the battery replaced

Ah Ha! So the question is does "replaceable" mean "user replaceable".

I would have to say it does, but if that is the case, why does the manual say nothing about how to replace it? Guess we will have to wait until one of us gets hands on....

Interesting. Hopefully it won't get snippy like a GPS ("Please return to roadway!" when ti doesn't know about a new bridge).

This could be a great option for proofing manuscripts.

Yeah, I am as well -- that would certainly grab some sales from the immediate gratification crowd, much like Apple does with its iPod announcements.

Of course, if (purely hypothetically, of course) much of one's library were to consist of de-DRM'd books legally purchased elsewhere, one might be a bit hesitant to place them on an Amazon server.

No .epub support on the Kindle 2 -- very disappointing. Will companies ever learn not to try to corner the market with proprietary file formats?

BWaldron would you be so kind as to answer these questions about your Kindle usage:

1. In what format are the 488 non .azw formated books?
2. How did you get them on there?
3. Can you copy the .azw formatted books to your PC and read them from the PC (or does it involve a hack)?

Thank you!

1. All mobipocket format
2. Copied from my PC via USB (or emailed to my Kindle in some cases)
3. You can read (non-Topaz) Kindle books on your PC if you are willing to remove the DRM, possibly flaunting the law depending upon where you live.

I think ePub is a better format...still, the Mobipocket software (or Calibre) can convert unprotected ePub books to Mobipocket for reading on the Kindle.
