What is your personal e-reading philosophy? Buy(from where?)or Borrow?

I just buy the ebooks.

When I had a Sony, I sideloaded all of the content, including purchases from Sony ebookstore. When my last one died, and I switched to Kindle ebook reader, I stopped downloading books to my computer and switched to downloading into the apps. (I just noticed this statement is a little confusing; while I have a Kindle reader, I don't like it as much as the Sony and most of my reading is through six different ebook apps.)

I'm currently reading through books that I purchased years ago, deleting them as I go. Having them or not having them is exactly the same thing, because in either case, I'm not going to look at them again. Digital content has no resale value and I don't give them away when I'm done, so there is no benefit to holding onto them.

I do save books that I would like to read again someday, but that number is very small compared to the number that I am not going to revisit.

At some point I'm going to have to look at my downloaded books and decide what to do with those too. Some of those can not be redownloaded and I'll want to hold onto them.

I'm working through a backlog of books I purchased years ago through Nook, Kobo, Amazon, and Apple. When I purchase books now, mostly for my book club, I use bookshop.org (an affiliate to a local bookstore). I also borrow books with my library card through Libby and Hoopla.

I'm still mulling everything over- the big sticking point with me is all of my highlights and notes I've accumulated over the years, they really help with being engaged with my reading and remembering etc. Kobo just is not there yet in this aspect: for instance I'm currently reading Dey by Edwidge Danticat with Libby on my KLC and it keeps swapping out the us vs the uk edition and I lose all my progress and notes- its infuriating! I know I can manually download and avoid this but it is extra fiddling and I lose my Storygraph sync too. One positive development was I finally took the time to manually modify the code for overdrive and got my two library cards syncing again(OwlInSpace method on github)

I've found no issues with Storygraph on my Kobo ereaders and my Kobo purchases.

OTOH, how are you managing to swap versions between the UK and US editions without taking some action on your part? If the copy you are reading was synced from Kobo, it is tied to the ebook ISBN. The US edition's ISBN-13 is 9780593803530 and the publisher is Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group. The UK edition's ISBN-13 is 9781529452396 and the publisher is Quercus. If you downloaded and transferred the book using an .ascm file and either ADE, calibre's ACSM plugin or other tool, again the ability to see the other edition would not exist.

I bounced a query off Kobo and basically, they could see no path by which you could be switching between the two editions without some manual intervention involving connecting to both a North American and a UK library and borrowing from both. Heck, from personal experience, if the library edition has a different ISBN from the edition available through Kobo's store, you are not able to sync a copy to your Kobo ereader.

I would suggest you contacting Kobo's tech support since I could not supply your Kobo ID so that limited the amount of digging into the details of the loan that could be done.
