5. A rev of the current device with the Epson controller or move to the plastic screen.

6. Least likely a whole new rev of the 6inch device with different case similar to pics that were previously leaked. Although non-replaceable battery and no SD card slot seem like steps backward that I can't see them taking.

I don't follow your reasoning. I think the issue is just as I said way back when the shortage started. Amazon has a history of underpromise and over deliver. I am pretty sure they projected longer ship times than they expected. They were planning all the time to increase production to meet this increased plan. The way you get happy customers is to deliver the device sooner than you originally promised.

Also, I think if the device is radically different rather than some incremental changes they won't be able to ship them. You have to fulfill the orders with what people were expecting. Not some radically different model. This would be like Sony shipping the PRS 700 to people that ordered the 505. Most people would be unhappy.

While I follow your reasoning pilotbob, I can't ignore all the indications suggesting a new version of the Kindle. We know its been in the works..who knows how radically different it is in form or whether its the leaked version or not. But I doubt Amazon would make this sort of hype for a firmware upgrade when a new version of the Kindle has been anticipated for awhile.

I also think your points 3-4-5 still count as a new version of the Kindle, so we are actually in agreement. Although I think a larger screen will come later.

I think they are caught between a rock and a hard place. I've seen other mfg caught in a similar dilemma when winding down existing model production before the new models are ready resulting in periods of no inventory (specifically a time when you couldn't buy an HP printer for months). I would've have expected the wait time to not jump overnight to months if they were still producing. Keep in mind, this happened AFTER the Oprah deal was done and before the Christmas rush. We'd hear more about people still getting new Kindles as they came in. Likewise, they couldn't suddenly start producing the old version again to meet demand, if they had exhausted their supply of the old processor, etc..

My guess is that they release a new enhanced (at least in their minds) Kindle and the price goes back up to $399. People who have been waiting will get the new Kindle (with a faster processor) at the old Kindle price. Kindle 1 users get a major firmware upgrade. And there is a new Kindle for sale.

But I am speculating just like everyone else

The "new firmware" has to be 1.20 which has just been released, because it will take until Feb 9th for it to be installed on most Kindles. This does not have folders, but it might have ePub or PDF support (or some other new ebook format support). Someone with the update on their Kindle should try DRM-free PDF and ePub to see what happens.

The same here. Besides, if those leaked pictures are for real, I don't find the Kindle 2 easier on the eye than the Kindle 1. That bevel is way too thick, in comparison with the screen. It makes it look cheap (the Kindle 1 doesn't look too bad, it's only that keyboard that I don't like...)

But I do hope they'll announce an introduction of the Kindle in Europe. It will make my options for a new ebook reader grow by one...

I think it should be 5" with a wacom touchscreen and stylus for collaborative note taking, come with an unlocked HSDPA sim card slot, support bluetooth and usb keyboards for note taking as well as come with a built-in table stand for when using the keyboards. It should be like the latest Samsung E-Ink prototype:

http://gottabemobile.com/2009/01/09/...s-e-ink-device

But in my opinion without any border around the screen. And have the minimum amount of buttons on the side. Only buttons needed next to the screen on the front of the device should be small next page, previous page, menu and other few shortcut buttons. This way, such a 5" E-Ink device could fit in any pocket.

In terms of software services, I think it should come with a totally open rss feed agregator and a way to select pages with your computer that then are beamed to you E-Ink reader so that you can then later read all of it on an E-Ink screen instead of a normal backlit computer screen.

I always have to wonder about people who have nothing better to do than bash the other guy's device .... and then they turn around and whine that they don't have the particular functionality or access that the other device has.

For the record, unless a whole bunch of people vote you in as the design-czar for the world. I really don't give even the tiniest rats ass about your views of what is ugly, fugly, or any other iteration of same.

Agreed. If it looks like the alleged leaked photos then it hasn't improved. Will stick with my dark blue Sony PRS-505.

For me personally, the most interesting information about the new Kindle will be format support. I'm very curious if Amazon's (Bezo's) business/revenue model will allow for the new Kindle to support a wide variety of formats.
