Anyone find it weird this is coming after the drm free decision . Also maybe a good next move is to try ask more publishers to go drm free if possible

As of May 21, 2026 you will no longer be able to use any Kindle made before 2013 to download any eBooks from Amazon.

I'm pretty sure they want to prevent Amazon exclusive books from being uploaded to shadow libraries. And most of those aren't from big publishers.

It's about controlling their exclusive content and Kindle Unlimited.

The thing is, no one bothers with scanning or screen capturing these days. The vast majority of pirated books are "liberated" using the deDRM tools. As the revenue from their exclusive content and KU is important to Amazon, they want to stop this practice.

PW1 is the name used here on MobileRead for the Paperwhite 5th generation since that was the first model of Paperwhite.

There is no such thing as a Paperwhite 1st generation. Calling it that is a mistake on Amazon's part.

Perhaps this can be used as a the basis for a complaint when those devices are cut off. "What do you mean my Paperwhite 5th gen is no longer supported? That wasn't in your list of obsolete devices!"

I follow some independent authors and a lot don't want to go DRM free as they are paranoid about pirating
