What might have happened was that your unit was swaped out
for a new one and upon inspecting and testing the new reader, they
didn't dim or shut the lights off and use the reader with LEDs turned on
to check for dust. In daylight the dust is nearly impossible to detect.
SO they figured the unit functions and shipped it to you.

You should have attached instructions or a note on how to test the unit
in the dark with LEDs turned on and THEN look for dust.

sorry to hear that.. it does suck. You could buy a new one at the
retail level and then swap the unit and return the one with dust
and let sonystyle deal with it internally. *this does not always work*
but worth a try...

that's a big concern, if someone need to use the LED.

is there anyone that do not have this dust issue, after using the reader for a while? or all 700 readers have this issue?

Hi all,
Having owned this particular reader for all of 4 days with probably less than 15 hours used, I noticed an alarming amount of dust showing up in the upper right hand corner, behind the touch screen of the PRS-700 well out of cleaning reach. In an effort to figure out where it could be getting in by, I used a can of compressed air and found that dust seemed to be infiltrating through the seam between the grey border of the touchscreen and the black body of the prs-700. I turned on the led sidelights in a pitch black room and sure enough noticed some light leakage from the side lights showing through the seam.
I exchanged my orginal reader at Border's and got a new one in its place.

In what will hopefully stop any further dust from getting into this reader, I cut out a slightly oversized piece of adhesive protective film (large enough to cover the touch screen as well as the entirety of the seam) and planted that onto my PRS-700.
I believe this will keep dust particles out from the reader, and has the added benefit of retaining touchscreen usability, diffusing off some of the glare of the screen, as well as protecting the screen from any errant bumps and knocks (This adhesive film is the exact type that I use on my HP tablet PC to protect the screen, I got mine at photodon.com but any type will do, just make sure you get it thin enough for touchscreen usage and matte finish).
Will post again if dust begins to show up on this one as well too.

Cheers,

Will

(Also, for those that didn't know (as in me) I noticed that the upper right hand portion of the PRS-700 is magnetized so you can "stick" your stylus on there instead of having to put it back in it's slot everytime.)

When I attempted to blast some air at all corners and orifices, I found the unit
to be AIR TIGHT since I could not even move a fleck of dust. The seams you talk of
appear to be sealed in such a way that I can't even imagine anything entering through there.

Igorsk our community dis-assembler, discovered that the dust comes from within
the unit and not something that emanated externally as you and I thought. Sony
is aware and has contact individuals but since you swapped yours, hopefully
you're okay. My issues with dusk is minor and not worsening but exists.

I couldn't get any air in mine either... But really we shouldn't have to invent ways of keeping dust out of these units. I haven't had mine for a couple of weeks now and I'm so frustrated when it comes back if it's not perfect I'm going to try to sell it at a huge loss and grab a cybook as I should have done.

Just wanted the darn lights.

Really shows you why Sony is loosing money though doesn't it?

Dust?

I've had my 700 since they were initially available and it comes with me everywhere I go. Since I have it with me now at work, I turned out the lights in my office and put the 700's lights on the highest setting and I still can not see any dust. I have two dogs that shed and I take my 700 on the PATH train & the New York Subway E Line every work day. So at least as far as I can see, environment and use do not seem to be a factor.

Since it was mentioned that the 700 has a magnet in the upper right where most of the dust probs seem to be, is it possible that it isn't dust at all but actually crap the magnets have introduced during manuf. that are stuck tightly between the screens??? Just a thought.

Yea? Then why does dust "stick" to everything?

Quick update: I called them today to ask if they had any idea what's going on. They are replacing the unit, but unfortunately for me there is no stock. So my Christmas present is expected to not come back to me for an UNKNOWN period of time.

Her best guess on an eta was 6-12 weeks.

I'm telling you... I'll never EVER /EVER/ buy another sony product. In 6-12 weeks I will be selling a brand new PRS 700 in the flea market.
