AFAIK you can't listen to music with any eink Nook, there's no support for it.

Tolino also has quite basic software and I don't know how good the battery life is, but yes, it supports epubs, which is your first priority.

A decent phone, with screen blank, has better battery life and usability than any eink for music. Most eink ereaders with audio only really have it for TTS/Voice view, though later Kindles and Kobo can use rental audiobooks from the Mothership shop (but phone apps are better and you can use more subscriptions / sources).

The nook firmware is atrocious. Do not get one. You'll hate it.

The OP said they actually want basic, simple software. Did you not see this?

I thought that you were wrong, so I checked it. There is BT support, but the audio support over it is really broken. I used a BT speaker and it sounds like it's doing keyclicks correctly. In fact, it's just failing as you can see by the train wreck of a logcat.

I was raised on Nooks but they really dropped the ball on everything.

Nooks are fine. There are many who like them and it does seem like the answer for the OP. I never thought of it.

Hyperbole doesn't help when giving advice.

À Nook DOES sound really good right now.
What's with the whole "partitioned" comment, though? I did a quick Google and, what: do some Nooks supposedly cut off storage space for sideloading? I don't see anything mentioning the newest model does this.. But, obv, I could be mistaken!

Ugh. Yeah, I just want something SIMPLE! Drag 'N Drop, is the #1 priority (well, aside from one in which the light cannot be turned off), priced under $120, and is at least 6.8" to 7.8" At this juncture, I might as well wait for BF/Cyber Monday deals.. See if I can snag a Kobo Libra 2/H20, Nook GlowLight 4 Plus, or Tolino Vision 5

Independent of brand, if you can live with what comes as stock your life will be simpler.

If you're like me though, massive customization is the only thing that will make you happy.

I think the 7.8'' Nooks are not partitioned. Smaller Nooks are, that is, you usually have only a small part of the whole storage available for sideloading and the rest is reserved for B&N purchases. But as I said, that's (probably) not the case with the 7.8'' Nooks (the 2019 Glowlight Plus, which I had, certainly had the whole storage available and some Reddit posts say that the 4+ version is not partitioned either).

I thought the latest model does partition and it was the previous one that did not. Is this correct?

Reading the Glowlight 4 Plus thread here, it seems that it's not partitioned, but the previous 6'' model was.

But one problem I know exists is that B&N took away hyphenation. So if the OP likes hyphenation, then the nook will not do.

Yeah, so, with my list, I am about ready to take the Kindle PW off... and add/replace it with the Nook GlowLight Plus (2019, or Plus 4 if it can be found on Black Friday for under the $120 mark!): it's 7.8"!, 3.5mm audio jack, screen is flush, software seems bare-bones/basic (which is EXACTLY what I want).

I can't seem to find an answer, but, wonder if anyone can confirm if the GlowLight Plus (2019, or newest) can play audio/mp3's? Is there a media player? Or is it relegated merely to audiobooks?

My new list, narrowed (expanded?):
* Kobo Libra 2/H2O [USED, if found under $120);
* Tolino Vision 5 - 7" (very RARE in the US, but I see one on eBay for a very nice price!);
* Tolino Vision 5;
* NOOK GlowLight/GlowLight 4 Plus

Thoughts?
The software of the Tolino Vision 5 and 6 (hardware equivalents of the Kobo Libra H2O and Libra 2) is very simple, basically what you can see in the screenshots. It is intended for downloading a book and reading without further complications. The Tolino Vision 6 has an excellent display (although without lighting the differences are less obvious) and a poor battery life (around 10 hours). I bought 2 because I found an amazing deal on Amazon and both were the same price as a Kobo Libra 2. Surprisingly it is now one of the monochrome readers I use the most (although I have adapted it with some Android apps to solve some of its shortcomings).
