My 2 cents worth.
I picked up a Clara Colour last week. Love it, but won't be keeping it. For my usage, the colors are fine. No, they're not super saturated, but they look nice to me. Yes, I had to up the backlight from 10% on my Clara HD to 20% on the KCC. Shrug. The deal-breaker for me: I want to keep my entire collection on the device. Not a problem with the KCHD after I replaced the SD card with a 32GB. I could have sworn the KCC had 32GB out of the box. Nope. 16GB and not upgradable. I'm about 500 books beyond what it'll hold right now. Yeah, that's on me for not double-checking the specs before I ordered. But, argh! I like the device, I really do. I just don't want to change the way I use it. |

I own both a Libra 2 and a Libra Colour, and after roughly six months of real-world use I exclusively use the Colour now. My personal use-case is reading b/w text mainly at night, and colour Manga.
Colour Manga/Comics are an absolutely joy. I can't overstate how wonderful it is to read full colour Manga on e-ink. Similarly, seeing full-colour book covers on the homescreen and lockscreen is wonderful - it's not 'necessary' by any means, but it is a surprisingly nice feature nonetheless. For b/w reading, yes, side-by-side KLC vs KL2 there is a difference that I'd characterize as a slight 'graininess' to the black and white text. I took some side-by-side pics in the original poll thread for folks, and yes, the Libra 2 is objectively better in contrast, brightness, and whiteness quality. If you're exclusively reading B/W text and you don't find any interest in having colour covers, colour lockscreen or any of those small touches, then Libra 2 is the best possible screen IMO. But, I don't read on two separate devices side-by-side so it's not a constant comparison. I use one, or the other, and in both cases the device is meant to fade away and let you read. And, reading b/w text on the KLC is not only just fine, the overall experience of reading on the colour is the better experience. For me, that comes from the response time and overall 'snappiness' of the device itself, colour covers, a just-fine b/w reading experience, and joyful colour experience. I initially swore I wasn't interested in colour eink because I only read b/w text, but yesterday I purchased a Kobo Clara Colour.
I went in to JB Hifi (Aus) fully intending to get a Clara BW to use 'on the go' because my Libra 2 is a little big to throw in a bag, but walked out with a colour instead. I still prefer the screen size and buttons of my Libra 2 but other than getting used to that change I am not seeing any downsides after 3+ hours of use. I was a little concerned after reading many comments about how dark it would be but have only needed to up the light by 5% (10% on libra2, 15% on clara) to read comfortably. In my limited experience so far it was worth the extra AU$20. Would the BW have been 'better'? Who knows - but I am happy with my choice. |

I love the Clara Colour! It's so light and cute. I also have the Libra 2 Colour, which I like as well. I think the colour highlights and book covers really add to the reading experience.

I also love my KLC. I am convinced that those disparaging it are doing so because they simply enjoy complaining and arguing. They are aware that there are measurable differences in the screens used, and that they simply cannot abide.
I don't spend any time at all measuring the contrast, or scrutinizing the font sharpness. I use my device for reading. Pure and simple, I use it for reading. And it is absolutely wonderful for reading. I don't have any issues at all with the sharpness or the contrast. I actually read on these forums that someone posted that the screen on the KLC prevented him from enjoying reading a novel (I am paraphrasing). Such a statement is laughable. Such a person would no doubt spend his time behind the wheel of a car looking AT the windshield instead of looking through it. He will eventually have a crash. I suppose we should all be grateful that they aren't audiophiles... Or rather, those who spend so much time complaining should be grateful. Their heads would no doubt explode in their first month of such pursuits. |

I like silence, for example. So all those people who like to listen to music or have TV playing in the background are obviously idiots or nutcases, because their preferences are different. ![]() |

Someone who believes that it's impossible to enjoy reading a novel on a KLC is not citing a fault in the novel itself, not complaining about the writing style or the plot. The contrast is slightly less than that of other screens. Not enough to seriously impair the legibility of the text, no. The text is slightly less sharp than that of text on another screen. Not enough to seriously impair the legibility of the text, no. But enough to prevent them from enjoying reading. The quality is slightly less, and they know it. They can't stand that. These are the same people who can't enjoy listening to a song if they perceive a fault in the sound quality, no matter how slight. I don't suggest that they should buy a device that they can't be happy with. I am simply stating that they are not satisfied with buying a different device, they come here and spend a lot of time and energy explaining that no one should buy one of the devices that they don't like because it's impossible to enjoy reading a novel on those devices. They are more to be pitied than anything else. |

Yes, it's possible. But possible and enjoyable are two different things. You said it was laughable that someone might not enjoy reading on the Libra Colour, because YOU are enjoying it. It's the same as someone saying it's laughable others don't like the same things that they do, and are to be pitied for their different preferences.

The color filter makes the screen darker with less contrast. Not everyone sees the same way. So the darker screen with less contrast may make it harder to read. I'm not finding it laughable because someone files the KLC hard to read. I fully understand why. That person would be better off with a Libra BW if Kobo would make one for those of us who really do not want color with a Kaleido filter. I don't want to have to turn on the light all the time to read. lot of the time I don't need the light with my Libra 2. But I don't want a Reader where I do need the light all the time.

The Nxtpaper 14 (14.25") is fabulous for unavailable PD works that are PDF scans. The 3:2 aspect nice for two pages in Pocketbook app (PDF or epub content) which can crop excess PDF margin. Similar or better battery life to Oasis or Sage (with light off on the eink). Last edited by Quoth; 12-03-2024 at 02:32 PM. |

They're too large and heavy to read a novel comfortably on, for me. No bezels by which to hold the device with your hand, either. I'm nearsighted and like to read holding my ereader in one hand - I couldn't do that with those tablets.

It really is nice of you guys to enter a thread titled: "So far I love my Colour Kobo. What about you?" to explain how much these devices suck.
