For me, I hate Windows 10. I am happy to use Calibre portable 5.43 on Windows 7 with my Kobo libra 2 (its firmware is not the latest but I don't see why firmware 4.33, or Calibre portable 5.44, would not work this way).
Some people are on an old enough version of Calibre where it won't work with their device such as a Kindle PW5 and the forthcoming Kobo Clara 2e.

I see no reason not to run Windows 10. It works perfectly well and the UI is good. What's going to happen is there's going to be more and more software that won't run on your Windows 7 system. If the current Sigil runs on your Windows 7 system, eventually when it's built on Qt6, it won't work. Calibre 6 won't work. You will lose out on any new features. And if Kobo comes out with a firmware update that needs the Calibre Kobo drivers modified to work with the database, you'd not be able to use that firmware and any new firmware with Calibre.

IMHO, it's a lose-lose situation not to upgrade. What is it about Windows 10 that you do not like? I never found anything not to like.

Calibre Portable 5.xx doesn't always run on Windows 7. You're lucky if it does on your computer.

What is it about Windows 10 that you hate?

I've run Windows 10. Still do. I see nothing about Windows 7 that's any better.

Here's the thing, you see no reason not to run Windows 10. But, others do not like it. Personally, Windows 7 worked better for me. MS have made changed in Windows 10 that I do agree with but, I've given up on fighting. I could go to Linux, and I do use it for my work. But, I have exactly the same problem there, I don't particularly like any of the desktops I have tried and they change them as much as MS changes things.

But, it is well past time for you to give this a rest. Anyone who is not running Windows 10 or Windows 11 is doing it for a reason. There are a lot of reasons not to. Whether the reason is good reason, or one you agree with or I agree with or anyone else would, is immaterial. It is their decision. They have made the decision one way or another. They will know that they will have compatibility problems going forward. You constantly badgering people about it does not help. And yes, you are constantly badgering people. I'm not going to bother counting, but, I feel like half your posts since calibre 6 was released were about this. It's probably only a quarter, but, that is still far to many times.

So it's time for you to stop. This is not helping anyone. If you can't help people in some other way, then just don't reply.

For what it's worth, one friend of mine is still running Windows XP on one computer. He has a small NC machining setup and the controller software didn't run under Windows Vista and the computer was not capable of a Windows 7 update to allow running the software in a virtual session.

If anyone wants to run an older OS for whatever reason, I'm not bothered unless they complain that the newer versions of whatever software they try to run does not work.

I know this thread is several months old, but I just wanted to point out that Linux doesn't necessarily need a new computer to work well. Many distros offer "lightweight" options that are intended for older computers but are still capable of running the most up to date applications. Anything that uses the Xfce desktop environment is a good choice.

I completely agree. I'm running 19.3 32bit on a 15 year old netbook. Sadly, the most recent calibre update is only for 64bit. But I am happy to run my older version of calibre just to have my collection backed up in a fourth place (and to be able to browse occasionally.

Mint 19.3 is still supported and pretty good. You've got about 2 years to save up for a S/H 64 bit laptop.

I've 64 bit, Mint 20.1, but I won't update to 20.3. I'll see what the next LTS in the 21.x series is like.

Still on Calibre 5.44 here

A laptop needs to be terrible not to manage Mint desktop. But XFCE is certainly less hungry. I usually install Cinamon and XFCE after Mint, and an extra user or two in case I break something.

There is a new media server out there that runs on Docker called Komga (https://komga.org). It’s initially being touted as a comics and manga server, but since it supports epub, there are ebook libraries popping up for it. These libraries are called repositories. As with Calibre, you’d run the server on your home computer and access it via the web. I haven’t tried to access one of these libraries with my Kobo web browser yet, so I have no idea how compatible they would be, but since you were asking…

I have modified this plugin to support the Kobo Clara 2E reader.

It seems to work OK on Linux but I don't have access to any other OSs to test it.
