My advice is create a kobo account. Register for the kobo plus trial and get free ebooks from kobo just to test it out. That way when you need to buy a book from them you already have an account.

Yes. Borrowing books is through the Kobo store and that needs you to sign in.

A kobo device will not let you finish the initial boot if you don't have a kobo account.

You need an email address. It does not have to actually be linked to a Kobo account, or even exist.

I have used made up email address's, which don't exist, when I returned devices for whatever reason, usually its the screen, this is so I can show the store member the problem.

If you do not want to use an existing email address to create a Kobo account, create a new email address with GMail or Outlook and use that.But it's a good idea to have a valid email address with your Kobo account.

I use my main email address with Kobo and I've never had a problem in over 6 years.

Someone on the Reddit commented that navigating in the library, opening books and such was still as slow as on the older Kobos. So it seems the fault lies with Kobo for not optimizing their UI the way Amazon has.
