One of the libraries I use deployed SimplyE a couple of months ago. I have not played with it yet, but they list the device requirements as "Android, iOS (iPad/iPhone/iPod touch), or Kindle Fire device". I really prefer reading on eInk, so this is annoying, but fortunately there are only a couple of Amazon authors I follow anyway.

I hope if any of my libraries sign up it will be in addition to, not in place of, Overdrive, similar to Hoopla availability. It’s just easier for me to get any Amazon imprints I’m interested in via KU, which I sign up for once or twice a year. I do think it’s an important step that Amazon starts making these available.

This is strange: SimplyE is in Amazon’s Appstore for Android (something Android users can install on their devices), but the listing says it isn’t compatible with my Fire devices. Presumably you have to download an .apk and install it that way.

And even though Amazon has this fantastic relationship with Overdrive, the Libby app isn’t available from Amazon’s Appstore for Fire tablets: you have to use the creaky old Overdrive app.

Hoopla, Kanopy, Axis360, and RBdigital are available directly for Fire tablets.

Maybe it will show up in the near future.

Been that way for a long time re app/Fire availability. Many of the ePub ereader apps not available either. Though I will always miss my HDX, I’m happy to have switched to iPad a few years ago.

As of January 2022, Amazon cannot withhold these eBooks from libraries in Maryland.
