thanks. in the last couple of days i've tried 4.12. 4.15. and the latest two versions which obviously includes this firmware. i can't say for certain because i haven't tried 4.20.146.22, but i'm pretty sure though if you go to the table of contents in any of the newer firmware versions while reading a kepub, instead of it showing what page your on in the current chapter (for example page 16 of 91) it now shows what page your on in the whole book, which for me could be page 132 of 20.386 when i'm reading one of the delphi classic complete works. it begs the question why change it?

just like the go to page that's gone the same way as the dodo in the latest versions the page left in chapter while in the table of contents was a longstanding some would say (myself included) a very important/useful feature.

i can't understand why Kobo would do this, surely it's better to retain existing features and add new one's rather than it being either or/one or the other.

best wishes koboy

It shows both. Header shows page in current chapter. Footer shows page in the total book. You can swap them via a patch if you would like.

Here is an image (by default, header also shows chapter title, footer shows book title. I removed those via another patch).

Aside from pages, both give the option of showing a percentage or time remaining.

You can also turn the header, footer or both off completely, if you want.

i have a modest 35 pages of collections sorted alphabetically by name. if i type 20 into the go to page i'm instantly halfway through the alphabet of authors names.

that's not where i mean, i'm not on about the header/footer. go to the table of contents at the beginning of the first chapter, what does it say, page 1 of whatever in the chapter? or does it say page 1 of whatever the whole book is?

Table of contents for me only says what page it is on in the table of contents (my current book is long. the table of contents alone is four pages).

With the header and footer having that information available, I don't need page numbers in the table of contents.

I think you mean the slider bar that pops up, not the table of contents. On the slider bar, it shows pages for the whole book.

But again, with the header and footer information, the pages on the slider bar don't matter. If I were reading one of those massive Delphi collections, I would be more likely to use the table of contents to jump to a book than the slider. And at that point, I'm not sure page number matters anyway, does it?

With 4.20.14622, you can set the header to show you what page you are on in the current chapter.

Last time I looked at the NCX/NAV table of contents, there were no page numbers other than how many pages the ToC uses.

For looking at a HTML ToC, I'm going to assume that you have the header set to pages left in chapter and the footer set to pages left in book. If the ToC takes more than one page, you will get a page 1 of however long the ToC file is and page xxx of yyyy for however many pages into the book you are and however many pages the entire book has. A HTML ToC is just another file much like a dedication, epigraph, chapter, whatever.

For what it's worth, my not so humble opinion is that page numbers in a reflowable document are not worth the paper they're not printed on.

That would be the header showing you that you are on the 1st of however many pages the list of links (the NCX is the proper ToC) has. I take it you mean the header.

They do help me a lot when I'm deciding whether I want to read the next chapter before turning in. In that case, I am happy kepubs go with the "one screen = one page" formula.

ePub shows the number of ADE pages left in a chapter which is good for me.

I find page numbers useful as it gets me a good estimate of how long the eBook is and how long a chapter is.

just for you i've fleetingly installed the firmware again on my touch. in reading settings i have pages left in chapter=header. footer=off. show book progress bar off/on doesn't make any difference. i have refresh the screen every chapter.

click in the middle of the screen near the bottom and it bring's up the name of the chapter i'm reading on the bottom left. it use to show what page number i was on in the chapter and how many pages of that chapter were left.

now instead it tells me what page number i'm on in the whole book, which is page 35375 of 67153. at the exact same place in the book and chapter with firmware 4.15.12920 installed it show's me i'm on page 19 of 91 in the chapter.

best wishes koboy

Oh, I know I could "fake it" one way or another... it would just be neat to have a one touch "Open random book" option in the menu. This is probably not something that could be easily patched in

The answer seems obvious to me.

The page numbers indicated how many pages of books I have and help me navigate to the one(s) I want to reference. Without them, I'm at a loss...big time.
