OK, now that you have (it's not MY fault!!) pushed me towards these online book/reader/library sites (I simply had not known about such things before), what, if any, are relative merits of the three I have seen mentioned here?...Shelfari, Goodreaeds and Library Thing. And are there others I should look at?

Certainly, if a "I have read" list was all I wanted, an exel file would be more than enough. But I find the additional info at these sites interesting.

Also, BookishDreamer, your avitar is a very attractivbe picture! Of course, this compliment comes from a retired plumber, so take it for what it's worth!!

Well GoodReads is the best because there is a MobileRead group there

I had a thread somewhere talking about GoodReads, and the merits of the other sites were discussed.

Shelfari is a waste of time (IMHO) because of the fact that they allow books to be entered with errors that are very severe.

Thank you, kind sir.

Sparrow picked it out for me and I think it matches my style rather well.

I've been keeping a log on a LiveJournal account since 2005. I create a post for each book read, listing the title, author, format in which it was read, genre (if fiction) and topic (if nonfiction), date completed, and a running tally of books read and number of pages read during the current calendar year. If I read an ebook or listen to an audio book, I record the number of pages in the first print edition that comes up on Amazon.

I figured out a kinda low tech way to figure out what I have already read. I went though the Chicago Public Library, made a list of all of the romance books I wanted to read - about 300. I put them all on my overdrive wish list. Now, as I check them out, I will remove them from the wish list. I figure anything I read before, I will have to take my chances. When I got physical books from the library, I listed the same books over and over, and realized as soon as I picked them up I had already read them. But to turn on the reading history on the library web site would allow THEM to see what I have read. Don't know what security risk I represent, but I'm sure there is something.

I like Libary thing, cause they have both generated suggestions, and user suggestions for book. its easy to track and add. and the suggestions are relevent. its easy to edit data. its also easy to see Series and stuff.
