Yup! Definitely Poe.
That, and I also had a big problem with the wolf eating grandma in Little Red Riding Hood. Most of the books I read a child were censored. Swear words blacked out etc. I don't think very much violence made it past the censors. If you think about it, even some lullabies like Rock-a-bye baby are pretty violent. Spoiler:
