speaking for myself only, I like seeing the covers because it makes it more like a real book. I like the book experience but can't read them and haven't been able to since early on. too hard to hold due to weight, poor vision, etc. the covers are like a blankey. it's a comfort factor. they make me feel warm and fuzzy while I'm reading. and when I start a book, I start on the cover; when I end a book I go back to the cover. I like the artwork, in general. I search out better covers and place them and convert so I have the best possible experience on my devices.

think of it like this. when you read a book book and you take a break you put a bookmark and close the book. it's kind of like doing that for me. it makes me and we all need more smiles in our lives.

Thank you for your thorough explanation re iPads. That was something I've always wondered about (people not married to the Apple ecosystem using iPads), especially as I've tried my niece's iPad occasionally, but found nothing there I can't get on my Surface, besides lesser weight. Admittedly I don't read mangas/comics.

Ah yes, paper books. Actually they've lost all their attraction for me personally. I don't have any warm and fuzzy feelings toward them. I can read them well enough, but I don't want to and haven't wanted for years. Probably that's why I'm not excited by covers either.

Now looking at my various ereaders generates that warm feeling in me. I'm probably weird.

I’m going to stick with Amazon and Apple. I’ve been using Apple devices since 1981. I like them even better today, especially with the data mining companies like Google as competition—I won’t ever trust those blood suckers. Kobo made good hardware, but the Kobos I had were FW challenged, and the bookstore was pretty sparse. Amazon has a great bookstore and their Kindles have enough formatting capability built in now I no longer need to modify books. I can just simply read and know my books are synced. I’ll let those with more years left on this Earth than I have spend more time with calibre than reading, I chose to read rather than mess around with my library in some digital swamp!

I guess a lot of people get bent out of shape about so-called walled gardens and proprietary formats, but the way I look at things, if they work and serve my purposes without exposing my data to anyone who wants to spy on it, then I’m happy.

they have for me too. I have some but I keep them only for sentimental value and I never open them. some can't be replaced. I much prefer my digital editions, but I want my full cover/book experience in digital form.

eta - I love my readers, but don't have that feeling about them

Agreed. Well, I still don't like DRM but as long as Alf works so I can read my Kindle books on Marvin instead of the very restrictive Kindle for iOS app, I'm okay.

I've had other e-ink readers and tablets before I switched to Amazon and Apple. I've got gripes with both but not nearly as many as I have with the competition which is what it boils down to.

Of course, if I had still been making $15/hr, Apple would simply have been out of the question.

I've resigned myself to the need to move to apple soonish. I love to jailbreak and I enjoy android a great deal but the thrill is starting to wear. soonish I'll be too old and will just need a device that works out of the box, and my son will have to buy it for me lol
