concearning a topic above with securing your wifi, because your connection slows down in speed:
Not always it's the case that when someone is connected wirelessly to your network that your speed drops because the other user is downloading a bunch of dat, or abusing your connection! Often it's just changing a setting in the router. If a user is on the edge of a wifi's range the router detects a low speed, and can lower it's transmission speed to wireless B. This will limit the overall wireless speed to 11Mbit as opposed to 54Mbit on a wireless G, or 108Mbit on a 'super G'(as netgear calls it). Unfortunately that would affect all users on the wifi, including the one who's sitting at 5 feet from the antenna. When you go to routerlogin.net on a netgear router, you can disable this setting, so that a router always remains in Wireless G,or N speed. That way you can still share your network without the loss in transfer speed. The user who's living on the edge will experience lots of connection breaks, and will probably need to relocate his computer's antenna to get better signal. When you see that speed is still slow,it could be either that someone is downloading a bunchload of data, or that you are sharing your connection with lots of people (eg: more than 100). In the latter case you might consider buying a second router, and connect them both via a LAN cable, and set one at one side of your house, and another at another side of the house. I'm not saying it's healthy, but in worst case you can set up 5 Wifi's in a large house this way. A central one, delivering via wired LAN signal to the 4 corners of your house. This way you can provide internet for over 500 computers at a time. Last edited by ProDigit; 11-19-2008 at 08:35 AM. |
