OK, back to the original problem 'error communicating with device' and the Kobo and SD card not ejecting properly, even via Finder. This means it's virtually impossible to use calibre to side load purchased content from 3rd party vendors (having just purchased the AI StoryBundle).

So I've given up and ordered a Icarus Illumina E654BK and we'll see how I get on with that instead. At least the onboard memory at 8Gb is big enough to cope with everything I need to side load!
