In "early 2017" we will get some useful information: if the 2017 batches of Aura ONEs are exactly the same as the 2016 ones, that will lend support to the explanation that sales being higher than expected is all there was to it.

If the next batch of Kobos has any significant differences from the 2016 ones, it will leave questions open about whether production was actually halted for a period of time to allow for any fixes or improvements to be implemented.

i think the latter is correct but i'm sure some of the Koboists will disagree.

I just got one from Indigo, so it seems there is some stock in Markham. Got it about a week ago.

I would imagine that they had ample time to place more orders - I am assuming that they have the hardware produced by 3rd party.
I said it before and I'll say it again: it's not likely that whomever they had producing the KA1 was sitting around doing nothing waiting for Kobo to order more. Kobo would have to get in line and wait for the next available production slot and it the company was any good it wouldn't shock me that would be at least 2-3 months out. And that would just be the assembly company. I doubt that e-ink has stopped producing screens for their other customers so Kobo would be waiting on them to be able to fit a Kobo order in (even if the rest of the components were off the shelf). Kobo couldn't just call up the day after pre-orders started and it looked like a success and said I need more tomorrow.
Will they attempt to change something to improve the screen quality in the mean time: who knows, maybe. But I'd be shocked if that was the primary reason for the delay.

I just got my third replacement for the device today what took quite awhile to get deft looks improved from the other one's I had expect the shadow bulbs at the bottom, so they also have some in stock somewhere.

Just checking today and the Chapters.Indigo website shows online as being on re-order and in-store as no stock. OTOH, the sleep cover shows online as being on re-order but several B&M stores have stock.

I would hazard a guess that you have as little information on the production as I do.
If there is a 2-3 months lead time for production slots, then they would have had ample time get this submitted.
I don't pretend to know how Kobo operate, I merely see that there has been a constant shortage of devices, differences between batches that have been released so far and, judging by this forum and personal experience, there is a high return rate.
If your returns exceed a certain rate, it's part of a normal QA process to look into production.

We don't know how the reports of returns on mobileread translate into total numbers of returns.

On one hand, mobileread members are a small part of the overall ereading community. On the other hand, Kobo did apparently design the KA1 for people like us...

The problem is, you're dealling with a biased sample. People don't feel the need to seek out forums dealing with "xxx" to make frequent posts about the continued successful working of "xxx".

You can't extrapolate a high return rate from the data here

The only Chapters/Indigo employee I know well enough to ask questions of was kind enough to share that at their store, the return rate for the KA1 was much the same as any other Kobo ereader and pretty much the same as their return rate for other electronics. This represents a small sample size and any conclusions drawn from it should be taken with a large quantity of salt.

I ordered one for myself on Christmas day. I had a bunch of gift cards & points to redeem so cash-wise I only paid $65 plus tax. Woot! At the time the site said a max order of 2 only but then on Monday it said re-oder online so they sold out. My new reader was delivered to me today and I'm playing with it and liking it so far.

I love the bigger size but I think I like the screen of the Glo HD better or maybe I just have to get used to it. I dont know yet.

I lost my Kobo Glo HD at the hockey rink right before Christmas. I decided I want to replace it with the Aura One, but of course it's out of stock in stores and online. I DM'd @KoboHelp on twitter and was told that it should be available in the second week of January. Hoping that will be the case!
