No, actually you don't. You just have to have it registered to your account. I have my old Kindle DXG registered for exactly this purpose (As magazines still don't get the K4PC love from Amazon), but I never bothered to upgrade it.

Yes, this is my preferred method. You don't need to pick the kindle you are putting it on. My kindle content is right next to my digital editions. Easy peasy.
