I have yet to see any reviews here. The only one I've found so far is one on the Chapters website, which was positive. Yet I'm wondering if I should just hold my breath and hope they make a new one with better resolution...

What a bizarre decision by Kobo.
I was looking to upgrade my old Kobo Touch and would have bought the Glo HD, but now I find I can't. The new Aura Edition 2 doesn't look like good value in comparison and I don't think I want it. Kobo doesn't really have a competitive 6-inch model when you look at the current Paperwhite. |

I still see some new Kobo Glo HDs for sale on Amazon by 3rd party sellers at original Kobo prices, you might check there or even eBay stores. I love my Glo HD so much I have 2 backups (hate capacitive touch and flush screens for a reader).

I'm in the UK and can only see a few Japanese imports available on eBay at the moment. I'll keep looking.
I've looked at the review of the Aura 2 in 1080p at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTaNyLN9jl8 and the text doesn't look perfectly sharp. But it might have to do if I can't locate a Glo HD. If it had a 300ppi screen, I'd have bought it without hesitation. |

Sometimes I think dpi is over-rated. I read PDFs (gaming books and comics) on my Blackberry Playbook (1024x600,7",170dpi) with no problems. An Aura Edition 2 beats that hands down with 212dpi.

It's just annoying that the Glo HD would have been ideal as an upgrade, but now I find it's discontinued and the replacement has outdated specifications and is only £10 cheaper.
I have the Kobo Mini and Touch - the Mini is about 200 ppi and it's a good bit sharper than the Touch, but still not perfect. So I can imagine 300 ppi being ideal whereas 212 ppi will be barely any different from the Mini. Though it's mainly the light I want so the Edition 2 might do. H2O I think would be too big. |

On the plus side, page turns on the Edition 2 look really good and speedy. See here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YCc...utu.be&t=3m04s when side-by-side with the Paperwhite 3.
I don't really want a Kindle so I think it will have to be the Edition 2 for me. Still wish Kobo would have used the 300 ppi screen, though. |

Yeah, I get what you mean. The general consensus around here is that the Glo HD must have been unprofitable. The Aura Edition 2 is still a nice step up from the Touch Edition 2, and after that you can go with H2O (still no indication it's going away, thankfully) before making the huge leap to an Aura One.

I have my doubts. I think it much more likely they thought they could make more money on other models; maybe introduce the mediocre Aura 2 so people will step up to the H2O or down to the Touch, or maybe the Aura 2 is more profitable. Or maybe they will sell more (Aura 2) with lower margin, and try and make it up on more ebook sales.

For anyone in the US, I see the Glo HD is coming back in stock on Amazon (third-party seller, fulfilled by Amazon) on January 19 https://www.amazon.com/Kobo-Digital-...8667HHJDE3XYDE
Presumably they are shipping them in from Japan. Seems to be the only place where you can get them new now. And I see Kobo Japan doesn't sell the Kobo Touch 2.0 or the Aura Edition 2. http://books.rakuten.co.jp/event/e-book/ereaders/ Probably not good enough for the Japanese market, which tells its own tale! |

Well, I bought the Aura Edition 2 today and it's a very nice little ereader.
I was able to check the Kindle Paperwhite 3 and the Kindle Basic side-by-side in a store and I didn't think the 300 ppi difference was that great. I could certainly see the greater sharpness when looking close up, but at a normal distance the Basic text actually looked bolder and darker so I guess that's the trade-off. I really don't know why Amazon doesn't offer a weight option for Kindle fonts... they are a bit too thin for me. So I was happy enough that the Edition 2 missing the 300 ppi wasn't that big a deal. The build and design of the Edition 2 is really nice. Excellent fit and finish, no creaks. It has 'normal' plastic (like on the white Mini) rather that the rubberised type on a lot of other Kobos (such as my Touch) so it's very fingerprint resistant, both on the back and front. It's also very compact and noticeably smaller than my Touch. A 300 ppi screen in that case would have been killer, but it's still more than good enough for me with the 212 ppi and it does come in cheaper that the Paperwhite. Very happy with it. |
