They've been able to water seal the device for IPX67 for one, add stereo speakers which give better sound and add a haptic feedback home button. That's 3x things they wouldn't have been able to fit into the iPhone if they left the 3.5mm jack socket in place. Yes they could have done all of that and left the 3.5mm socket in place but the phone would have to have got a lot thicker and larger to achieve all of the above. Quote:
Yes I agree there is an obsession sometimes from some manufacturers when it comes to making devices thinner and lighter although the iPhone 7 hasn't reduce it's thickness it's the same as the iPhone 6 and the weight is actually slightly heavier. Personally I really like the Oasis for what it's worth, the two batteries and a suggested degradation on charging the battery over time doesn't bother me. I won't keep the Oasis for 5 years by then I'll probably have 2 or 3 new Kindle devices to play with. |

The Voyage is a very nice device. But reading one handed in bed it would flop over sometimes and either fall to the floor or hit me in the face. (At least that's my excuse for my appearance.) It was great reading at my computer desk with the origami cover.
The Oasis price did not phase me as the cover is included which put it within a ten spot of the Voyage with good cover. Yes, I know there are cheap covers. But the Oasis was made for reading one handed. At my desk or in bed I can easily read one handed and shift hands without losing usability. The touch buttons require a strong enough input that I can hold it with my finger on the button and just press to change pages. I also leave my Oasis in the case except when I am reading. The battery life has proved as good as the Voyage. Now the life of the battery may or may not be less but you know what. I don't care. As much as a I read it would not bother me to replace after only a year or two to have the most comfortable reader. Now a device designed like the Oasis with a bigger screen would entice me to buy much sooner. I do not carry my Kindle around as my phone allows me to read when waiting for the dr, etc. And yes, it would have to be a Kindle. |

Honestly after upgrading from a pw2 to an oasis I can point out a few flaws in the Voyage that would be shared with the pw that the oasis removes that most people probably didn't even consciously notice.
First of all the Kindle sign on the bottom of the voyage/pw always bothered me. It was always in my periphery and would always remove me from being completely entranced in the book. The Oasis is great in this regard. The design of it shows no other text or even much of the borders so that you become completely entranced within the text itself. I can become more focused on the oasis than the other kindles. The actual buttons I am also in love with. The feedback you feel when you push the buttons on the Oasis gives me a feeling of accomplishment and progress that I lacked on the paperwhite. It is almost akin to actual paperbacks where you see how far you progress in the book by the physical act of turning the page. |

I have a Voyage (and a Paperwhite) and the Amazon logo doesn't bother me at all. When I focus on the text I don't even see the bezel anymore.
As for the buttons, my Voyage has page press but I keep it turned off. I swipe to turn pages and I always have, even back in the days of paper books. You're not pointing out flaws in the Kindle. You're just talking about your own preferences. There's nothing wrong with that but it's probably best to call it what it is. Barry |

before i purchased the voyage, i had a paperwhite. and the only reason i switched over was because the voyage has a flushed screen. while the oasis is nice (flush screen and all), i see no reason to switch over due to the price. if i did not have the voyage, i may have gone from the paperwhite to the oasis. but the switch from a voyage to the oasis is not worth it for me. my ereader is usually placed on a stand when i read, so ergomonics is not that big of an issue.

I'm thinking of upgrading to the Voyage, as the Oasis I have seen have a screen quality that is similar or equal to the latest PW. Even though the Voyage resolution is the same, for same reason the text looks richer (darker) against the screen. Am I the only one to notice this, or is this simply a case of the models I have seen.
I have not been able to to do a side by side comparison, so maybe my eyes are playing tricks. There was only one Voyage demo in one store and one Oasis in another. But, before I make the investment of upgrading I would like to know if Kindle screens have a history of consistency. Was the more faded look of the fonts on the oasis I saw a fluke? On the other hand, the Voyage is almost 2 years old model specs wise. These should be seriously coming down in price. |

It was a fluke, or rather a manufacturing inconsistency (since e-ink screens and the LEDs that illuminate them both seem to vary rather a lot between production runs and perhaps even between units). The e-ink screens on the Oasis and Voyage are identical, and the layers over the screen are perhaps slightly higher-spec on the Oasis than the Voyage (adjusted to allow for the light coming from the side rather than below, AIUI).

I have 3 Paperwhites and a Voyage and several of my neighbors also have Paperwhites which I see a lot since I help them with them. I also have other models. I find as much difference in individual units of the same model as I find between models. That's just how e-ink is.
I also have 3 identical Kobos and their screens are as widely varied as my Kindles. Barry |
