I wonder why they dropped TTS. Was it to promote audible? Or to get the price down?

I dropped my Voyage three weeks ago and the screen cracked. I was using the Voyage to read and a Fire to listen (TTS). It was such a pain to switch back and forth.

So I've reverted to my old Kindle Touch for a bit. This has some scratches and a few broken pixels. It's grayer than the Voyage, and the booklight in the case is just barely hanging in there. However, it is a real joy to be able to read and TTS on the same unit again. I probably stick with this until the booklight snaps off.

I think TTS is gone for a number of reasons: Fire tablets are available (for as little as $50USD), and these have much better TTS for people that want or require that feature, and that also works in non-English languages. Manufacturing cost is another consideration, as is eliminating 'one more thing to go wrong', which reduces support costs. Then licensing costs (I think Kindle used Nuance? or at any rate, it was not owned by Amazon).

It would be interesting if they added Bluetooth to Kindle so you could connect external keyboard/page turn devices and audio. But again, most people that need to do that can just use a tablet or smartphone for that. There might be some demand but probably not enough to justify it.

I recently returned a couple of my old Kindles and a Fire for gift card credit and the $20 trade-in discount. I went with Kindle Paperwhite 3 for one to replace my PW1, and basic Kindle for the other one (probably going to be a gift for someone). Really happy with the PW3, it may look like my PW1 but it feels much better (faster, better typography, and more refined UI). I held back on sending a third Kindle in, in case we see Voyage 2 at some point. The $20 offer is only good for a few weeks, so it is best to do trade-in only when you know what you will be getting with it.

OK I Do Like the New Fire 10 I got BUT these Trade-ins are BACK! So I went thru the Process & Tomorrow I be Sending in my K3! $30 for it & $20 Bonus to use towards another Kindle. I going for the PW3 Unless they go on sale I be paying $70 out of pocket! I am hoping they go on sale get it for $50

Anyway still good deal...when this last sale went off I tried to turn-in my KK ALL I got offered was $16!! Nope No way I was letting it go for that... Glad the brought this deal back!

So, now my mother wants to do the trade-in. Good, I persuaded her into it. But she wants the Paperwhite for its price. I have a Voyage, but have to "manage" her kindle remotely, from 750 miles away.

My question: is the Paperwhite software & on-screen-function placement the same as the Voyage?

I've been having a hard enough time when she had a K4 and I had a Voyage. (Me having to remember how things were done on the older kindle). I'm not sure I want to buy her another kindle that isn't the same as mine! (Specially since I'm paying for it anyway). Other than my Voyage's haptic buttons, does the Paperwhite basically behave the same as the Voyage?

She maybe like me Living on a Fixed income Even IF its a Gift makes me want to keep costs down. Did you explain to her with the Trade-in you will get $50 off? As for your question Far as I can see yes. PW3 is Newer by a couple of month! So No Not dealing with something Older.

If it's a paperwhite 2 or paperwhite 3, i think they behave the same!
My PW2 has the new home screen too (5.7.2.1), so pretty sure the PW3 is the same.

It's the touch ability to get a definition of a word, that I finally used to hook her into wanting a new one. I find it so great, myself! And yeah, it was only the rebate and the $20 bonus that got her interested. I had touted the touch screen before, to no avail

el-50 There is a Lot of difference in the PW2 & PW3 ... PW3 has ppi 300 while the PW2 has much lower ppi Pw2 is closes to the PW1 in a lot of ways than it is to the PW3
Early PW2 have the same Space for PW1 ..about 1,000 ebooks. Now If you got one a little newer then Both 2 & 3 hold about 3000+ ebooks. Also the Lights are better on the PW3 than the 2 & Writing is Chrisper at the bigger letters like folks like me with eye problems Need!

Warning for those sending in their older Readers... Box them up at home! I just got Charged $4.56 for a box! and of course they didn't have one to fit so they inc in the charge $1 for Peanuts...stuffing! Save money find your own box to ship it in!

You are right, but when i replied that they behave the same i was answering deb's question regarding the software similarity and on screen elements placement.
And tried to explain that if in my KPW2 things look or are placed very similar to those on my Voyage (both 5.7.2.1), i was pretty sure the same happens with KPW3 (regardless the tech differences between the three of them).

I guess I didn't state it, but my question (as opposed to questions in general) was about the currently for sale Voyage vs the currently for sale Paperwhite (cuz my mother is willing to do the trade-in and buy a new one). And I was, at the moment, wondering if the software *appeared* different between the two. I was concerned with me looking at my Voyage, and instructing my mom how to do something on a Paperwhite, 750 miles away. Wondering if I should insist that she get the Voyage, just so she is looking at the same thing that I'm looking at. I was glad to hear that the software looks pretty much the same between the Voyage and the current Paperwhite.

Yea that could be a problem. For you. hhhummm Is she having a BDay coming up? Get her the Voyage tell her you up graded to Voyage that covers her BDay & Christmas for 2016

Come Christmas IF she remembers & you go Over board in her mind ... Tell her you got older & Forgot hehehehe She just trying to watch you bottom line & not feel guilty... its a Mom thing.
