Why on Earth does it matter if a book is "real and accurate"? Just pick a work of fiction.

Take Harry's advice. If you want to read electronically, read fiction. Obviously, you will never be comfortable reading any sort of non-fiction in any electronic format. Shari |

Listen to HarryT and quit worrying so much.
I don't think there are many authors that are going to change much between the paper and ebook versions. Most authors know that people may go from e to p and back again. Now in the PD books, you may have different forewords and stuff added but the story itself remains the same. Or in some cases like from the original Italian, you can get different translations. But the meanings are usually the same. Oh and no it is not easy to do massive changes to a book. |

I would suggest what Harry suggested, but you should nevertheless be careful about what fiction you choose to read. Non-fiction may be your safest bet to read regarding fact-checking accuracy, since fiction writers often get their facts wrong, and often never realize that something is wrong. Stephen King is notorious for creating a candy bar in the original edition of "The Stand," when IN FACT, THIS CANDY BAR DID NOT EXIST AT THE TIME OF THE NOVEL'S PUBLICATION! This is the real horror (pun intended) in reading horror fiction. IN THE MEANTIME, HAVE FUN! THAT'S WHAT READING IS ALL ABOUT! ![]() Last edited by Dr. Drib; 05-22-2016 at 02:41 PM. |

Considering that your main purpose in reading these books is to teach English, I don't think it matters if they have been altered in some way; it's not as though you're teaching a course in English Literature.
I'd suggest that you choose books which have simple sentence structures and a limited vocabulary, to begin with. If you google something like: books for adults learning English, you might come up with some websites devoted to this from which you and your students can read. I've seen videos on youtube where the text is displayed on the screen and a (non robotic) voice reads the story while the text which is being read highlights for the reader to follow. You might try using a device like this rather than depending on your students to know which words you're reading to them. Make sure you hear your students read back to you. This is probably more important in teaching English than reading to them. It allows you to gently correct mistakes and help them with words they don't know. Learning to read a language is very different from learning to speak it. |
