It also isn't just deciding that the value vs. price of an ebook is worth it to you. It is a principles argument as well. It is the fact (at least perceived fact) that it costs soooo much less to publish an ebook (no production/shipping costs) and the publisher is charging the same amount, or more, for an ebook...
IF that extra amount was being paid to the author then it wouldn't be as big a deal. But, at best, the author is only getting a small percentage of that increased price. It is simply the publishers gouging the market off of the backs of the authors. |

Except that the publisher using two different sales methods, wholesale for paper and agency for digital, creates the street price versus list price problem in the first place.

The publisher doesn't allow discounting on the ebook, so it has everything to do with the publisher.

This is true. I was responding specifically to the statement "the publisher is charging the same amount, or more, for an ebook". In situations where the bookstore discounts the paper book it is not the case that the publisher is charging more, although it is of course true that the publisher is preventing the bookstore from charging less.

I think I will be paying $5 for the next ebook I buy. Not positive on the price because it is a preorder.
This is not counting the ones on sale. |

Hmnn. In Canada, the paperback of that Christie novel is available from both Chapters and Amazon.ca for $7.65 (reduced from a MSRP of $8.50). The e-book, from both Kobo & Amazon.ca, is $7.99 CDN.
It's a little annoying that the paperback is $0.34 cheaper. But it doesn't bother me too much. Cover price on the paperback is $8.50, I'm still getting a discount. Not as much as I would with paper, but at least it's a discount and the product is in my preferred format. Things are a bit better with, for example, Terry Brooks' latest paperbound, The High Druid's Blade. Chapters & Amazon.ca have it for $9.49, reduced from $9.99. The e-book is $8.99 from both Kobo & Amazon.ca. I think it boils down to this for me: if the e-book is close to the MMPB, I don't feel ripped off. Preferably, it should be a little less as some of the costs aren't there. But as long as it's close, I'm OK. |

The issue is with the Trad Publishers, I only buy indies (that's self published and small independent publishers) and the ebooks are always much less than the paperbacks.
Paperbacks do exist for indies, for at least 50% of the ebooks I buy. Dreamspinner brings out paperbacks automatically over a certain word count and self publishers use Createspace. |

I can often see (and buy) both the US and UK edition of an e-book in Google Play store. Usually the UK edition is cheaper.

(PBook margins runs 25% of cover and the wholesale is typically 55% of cover. So a £10 pbook grosses £5.50 and nets £2.50. eBooks gross 70% of cover/sale and net a bit over 50% of cover/sale so any ebook selling for over half the cover price of the pbook is bringing in more net money than the print edition. Beyond that it's all a matter of semantics and what the definition of is is. ![]() |

Bastion (Book 5 of the Collegium series) by Mercedes Lackey (all prices US$):
ebook (Amazon, BN, Kobo, Google Play Books, Books A Million): $12.99 mass market paperback (Amazon, BN, BAM): $7.99 (I just re-checked the prices a few minutes ago.) For over a year. Book 6 is out now (also $12.99 - but it's still in it's "New release" year....) $5 more for an e-book? NO. Just....NO. ![]() Don't know if it's the publisher (DAW/Penguin) or the author - but it is consistent and ridiculous. Further reading of the Valdemar group has come to a screeching halt, for me. And, since I like to re-read the whole group....well. None of them are getting attention while I remain annoyed. Meanwhile - has anyone noticed that C. J. Cherryh's backlist is just quietly appearing? I keep looking (waiting for the next Foreigner cover to show so I can pre-order it). The Morgaine omnibus came out in pb and ebook recently (with a preorder stage), but now other "holes" in her backlist are just showing up as ebooks. Not sure on the exact release dates, but I noticed (and promptly bought) Faded Sun omnibus 10/7, and Chanur's Homecoming 10/16. At "normal" e-book prices (parity with MMPB's). Finished Faded Sun on 10/8. I can finally start a re-read of the Chanur series - now complete in e-book format! ![]() |

Actually I forgot to mention in my post about Dreamspinner paperbacks always costing more than the ebooks, they actually give the ebook free if you buy the paperback.

US Hardcover $NZ 35.95 (in local shops) US Paperback $NZ 27.50 (from Amazon with cheapest shipping option) UK Ebook $NZ 5.66 (discountable, so Kobo works out cheapest) So the ebook is less than a quarter the price of the cheapest paper option. Quote:
