A Kobo can read a Kindle book if it's in one specific Kindle format (Mobi). It can't read any of the other Kindle formats and doesn't do Mobi all that well IIRC. As Harry said you'd be better off converting to ePub (or kePub).

Kindle eBook/format can mean a lot of various formats.

That may be so (other devices have read MOBI), but...

"They can't read kindle format" -- just pointing out that "kindle format" as such need not be converted to MOBI.
AZW3 specifically, does need to be converted... although you might as well convert to EPUB while you are at it.

Many books still download as MOBI. Some are older books that were never updated for AZW3. I think there is also a weird meme going around the self-pubbing industry that the best way to upload a book at KDP is to convert your carefully designed EPUB into old MOBI using calibre, then upload that.

As you are a calibre user, get my Kobo Utilities plugin. It has lots of functions, but the two you might be interested in is to backup the database so that you can restore it if there is a problem. And it can store the status of the books. These can be restored after a corrupt database incident. Or to another Kobo device if you upgrade.
The Database gets corrupted, i had it with my old reader and again with the new one.
Does this plugin also function under Linux? This sounds like a solution, although i would have to update almost daily to keep it current ;-)

I've tried converting Kindle books (AZW3) bought from Amazon to kepub to read them on my Kobo Aura using Calibre several times. About 1 out of 3 times it works fine and the Kobo's features work better on that file. About 2 out of 3 times either I get the message that it can't send some sort of file information along with the file. I don't have the message or a book to try it with on hand at the moment. Or else the file transfers with no message. Either way it doesn't show up on the Kobo except when looking at it from my PC. The Kobo interface doesn't list it. When that happens I'll put the epub on board and that works but features are limited as usual.

Does anyone know what I can do to avoid this?

Also, one feature that never seems to work with either epub or kepub files (or mobi) is the line spacing. Every now and then a book will allow it but most won't.

What can I do to get the features to all work?

Barry

The plugin should work wherever calibre works. All access to the device is through calibre code or using the same methods that calibre does. I'm fairly sure I have had at least one Linux make comments about it.

As to update daily, the plugin can be set to backup the database on every connection or the first time each day. Plus you can set how many copies to keep. And storing the reading status can be done on each connect or manually.
