Since you keep bringing them up, could you please explain to me how these 2 negative reviews prove your point? People with a negative opinion have a lot more incentive to write a review than those that are happy with it. If Kobo's are so bad the ratio should be a lot worse than 2:11. And the sample size in the reviews is a whopping 13 data points -- out of how many HD's do think have been sold? And your 2 bad reviews are better than 1 note on the Amazon forum how?

I will wholeheartedly agree that Kobo customer service can severely suck at times, but not covering this under warranty is not one of those times. There are lots of posters on here that complain about the quality of Kobo's firmware, but a pretty tiny number that complain about hardware. That's why people feel a need to respond ("defend") to posts that claim all Kobo's are terrible because they didn't work out FOR THEM.

DNSB: yes it was the sudden change that ruined it, also the humidity created by it.

Howyoudoin: there is no such information on the dangers ahead inside the box.

koboy: "although the help of a magnifying glass maybe required to read it" - even with a magnifying glass, no such information. As for buying another one, well Ive spent half my month salary on this one only to found out how fragile they are. I wont buy another one except if it is with plastic instead of glass, and the price is decent.

robko and others: "That's why people feel a need to respond ("defend") to posts that claim all Kobo's are terrible because they didn't work out FOR THEM" - I am not saying Kobo product suck. I one opted for one of them afters a few good hours of googleing. And I did notice that Sonis't post did trigger somehow, the opposite. The thing is like this: from what I can tell, you people are living in the "civilized" countries, your gains exceed by far mine's. Some of you exchanged many ereaders after they broke, or mobiles or whatever. Myself am living on a low budget, a bit more than 200 US$ a month, neto. So, those like me, would expect to: be well informed by the company about what could happen, be more advised that this is by far a more fragile product than mobile/tablet, that some of the products are a low cost (for instance AuraHD compared to Aura). I also expect for a site to have: working contact forms, correct telephone numbers and to offer solutions at the decent price for user mistakes. Now, for what I can tell, some of you live on a to bigger foot to know/remember how it is not to have money and defend companies that make billions on cases like these, denying assistance while misinforming consumer and selling, in some cases, low quality products.

I think this is the recipe for every company to get rich, see for example Microjunk. I am very disappointed to see, myself coming from a former communist country, how brainwashped some of westerners are, this is not adressed to you people, but to those who have buggy sites, dont care for shipping and lack customer support even for basic stuff. I have ordered things from the internet, from west, and found it very sad I had to deal with crap services at high costs, worse than inside my former communist country. And believe me, communism really washes your brain.

So, instead of carrying for a company that makes enough money to write them with many zeros, you should know also that some people earn their money putting their ass hard to work and dont have higher expectations than to be treated fairly. This is a specialized forum with informed people, but not many know all there is to know about eink and ereaders. I myself have found precious info after I spend a few hours in 3 days of search, to compare, read reviews and bad reviews. It seems Ive missed the important links

So when you say the number of complaints are small, its another reason for the company to take care of these complaints so there would be none. They CAN afford it, believe me!! Some, like Amazon, really do! So there is possible if one wants to!

Right?

PS! example: one courier company checks if the electronic device is to deliver gets powered on, in front of the sender, and another one lets you open the parcel see whats inside for 5 minutes and you can send it back if not satisfied. Also, after you shop online, you get email saying your order has been registered, another one saying someone is taking care of postage and another one after was send. Also, you can track it. There were cases when ordering from western europe I had to spend money on international calls, not even knowing if the command was registered. One time, I nearly called the police, although it was a respectfull company: no good phones, no email answering, not nothing but Silence. Thats what I said regarding brainwashed people

I understand and empathize with your predicament, but unfortunately e-readers are delicate devices that need to be babied. That is the nature of the beast with current technology and at the current price point.

Kobo does not have deep pockets like Amazon does. And even Amazon is not generous world wide as it is in the US. For instance Amazon India refused to deal with my Kindle 3 which developed battery problems. They insisted that I deal with Amazon US, and it made no sense for me to do so because of shipping and customs.

It's probably no consolation to a frustrated Kobo owner, who feels let down by Kobo, but I've had Kobo e-readers, for years, culminating in an Aura HD, which still performs flawlessly, I think it's just luck of the draw, I've never had any problems, with my Kobo E-Ink devices.

I would never subject them to an oven, that is a car parked in direct sunlight, come to that any electronic device, it's just not worth it....

i have 3 Kobo e-readers, aura 6", mini, touch, and like you i have had them for years. i agree they work ok, but they are definitely cheaply made devices and nothing will ever change my mind on that, if kindle supported the epub format i personally wouldn't owe a Kobo e-reader.

best wishes koboy.

There's a world of difference between cheap and fragile.

You could always use calibre to put your pubs on a kindle ;-)

so what then, what ereader supports epub, mobi and pdf while being reliable ?

Kindles are somehow limited. What about PRS-T1 from Sony, according to the specs it seems ok. Were they any good?

My iPhone 5s, my XYL's Nexus 6 and the daughter's Galaxy Edge would like to disagree with you. There are a lot of cheaply made devices with removable batteries and a lot of well made devices with non-removable batteries. The days of my needing to swap the battery in my cellphone to make it through the average day are now a fading memory. The old days of nickel-cadmium rechargeable batteries where the device usable lifespan was much longer than the battery lifespan are in the past.

probably none to be honest, if you want mobi more than epub then get a kindle, if epub is more important to you then buy yourself a kobo aura 6" it is the best of a bad bunch, or indeed the sony that you mentioned i haven't had one of those so im sorry i can't help you with that one.

best wishes koboy.

it's entirely your own choice, i don't like e-readers over 6 inch they are too big and bulky for my liking.
