I vacillated between purchasing the Kindle and the Sony 505 for several weeks until eventually going with the Kindle. The main reason for my decision was that the Kindle's battery is user replaceable. Being in the electronics field, I know what to expect from a rechargeable battery, and how easy it should be to replace one. Having to send an ebook reader back to Sony for a battery when all I have to do with the Kindle is take the back cover off made up my mind for me (Having my Ipod's battery die has influenced my decision also).
After several months of using my Kindle, the only downside is the lack of an Itunes type software to communicate with the unit. Perhaps some forum reader out there has any suggestions?
Hope these few words help with making your decision, good luck!

1. A bit off topic, but you can replace an iPods battery. It's not easy but it is simple if you buy on of the kits that comes with the opening tool.

2. I too would like some general software to catalog my books and be able to move stuff to the kindle. Calibre is the best bet for this at this time. You can import .prc books to it and if you don't convert them when you do a save to disk you can save it to the Kindle if you have it connected.

I am very particular, I get in research mode on something and part of my process is hands on so I do not do alot of internet commerce unless I have had a chance to check out the product in person. If I do like it and there is a considerable difference in price online then I order it online if not the store gets my money. That is why I have not yet added a kindle to my goody bag.
