Although I did just run to Amazon (USA) and order a copy of "Guards! Guards!" paperback yesterday (after the announcement) rather than try to remember who I loaned my copy to, and also get it back from them. I mean -- they still might *read* it; don't want to stop *that*. But I need to have a copy!

Mine was a library hard copy volume (excessed) ebay'ed over from the UK, during some time period when it was out of print and not otherwise available!

Sanderson's tribute is particularly good.

I think Patrick Rothfuss summed it up best:

"Terry Pratchett brought more joy to my life than any other author.
If you need me, I'll be hiding in my blanket fort for a while."

https://twitter.com/PatrickRothfuss/...36697538297857

A great, great loss and a writer that will live on for a very long time to come. His death rocked me back in my chair, and I couldn't believe it.

Kristine Kathryn Rusch describes catastrophic news over phone calls as "phone calls from your knees".

The sentiment fits Pratchett's death perfectly.

You are very lucky to have spent this time with three such people. I had met all three at Science Fiction conventions and would have loved to have got to know all of them better.

Still as a paid up Eternicon member (an eternal Science Fiction convention afterlife) I have hopes of doing so later,

I only met Terry once, but I remember it fondly. I was performing a one-man show of Neil Gaiman's graphic novel "Violent Cases" back in 1988 and as Terry was a friend of Neil's he came to see the show. I had a lovely chat with him afterwards, with me telling him how much I enjoyed his books and him telling me how much he enjoyed the play.

My sister told me that the Town Hall in Wincanton, Somerset (twinned with Ankh Morpork) flew their flag at half mast, and the Discworld Emporium shop was closed and had quotes from Terry up in the window.

I met Terry Pratchett at Minicon in 2005. At the time, I didn't know Discworld from Ringworld. (I have a copy of Ringworld, haven't gotten around to reading it yet) But after hearing him speak, I went out and picked up a Discworld book more or less at random - it was The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents. I pretty quickly devoured all of his Discworld books. I considered pacing myself - like that's going to happen.

I know it is terribly selfish of me, but when I heard that he had died, I couldn't help thinking "will there be any more Discworld books?" I understand his daughter will be continuing the series. Hopefully, she'll be up to his legacy.

His daughter Rihanna is a writer in her own right. She scripts video games and screenplays, including some very big name titles, so fantasy is clearly in her blood. http://www.rhiannapratchett.com

She's also involved in the TV adaptation of Good Omens.

Personally, I'd be happier if she chose to update the Discworld games that were originally released for PC and Playstation.

I still own a Playstation2 and keep it only for the Discworld games. Come to think of it, maybe I should dust it off and play this weekend.

I can think of no greater tribute that to re-read Sir Terry's Discworld series. It's been a few years, and at my age it'll probably all be fresh again. Unfortunately most of my Discworld library is in an obsolete format, so it will also mean re-buying it.

Depends how obsolete. Much of my collection is very old, and horribly obsolete by the standards of people here, but all still totally accessible ... oh, the wonders of paper!

Totally accessible to you, maybe, but not to everyone.

It's great that it works for you, though!

I read something written by the daughter before reading anything Discworld. It was the year 2000 and while in England I picked up a copy of PC Zone magazine. Rihanna was an okay reviewer, but not as good as the best ones, and I don't remember her being very funny. I guess and expect she has improved her writing during all this time.

Pratchett is one author whom I still PREFER to buy in paper. He includes so many jokes as footnotes, that it makes e-book reading more awkward. I'd rather just swivel my eyeballs down to the bottom of the page to find the footnote. So I've got my collection of Discworld books all as paperbacks.

Pratchett is one of the very few authors whose books I bought in hardback as soon as they came out. I was too impatient to wait for the paperback editions.

Sadly missed, irreplaceable, but at least he left a wonderful legacy.
