From Boxing Day to New Year's Eve is the standard Canadian deep-discount winter holiday sale period (we also get good prices on stuff on Canada Day & Labour Day which are our other traditional sale holidays).

Usually the best deals are on Boxing Day itself (which many places extend the full week), and you get maybe 1 week (usually just through the nearest weekend after) after New Year's Day itself for any other deals from a lot of stores (usually not as good as Boxing Week, but sometimes some fairly decent follow-up price-drops/sale extensions).

Jon means that it's not going to be useful for proofing books that you make (since the version of ADE is old), and that it's slower in page turns than modern devices.

I think you've got a cheap E-Ink reader that will work well for seeing how you like reading on a small, portable E-Ink device. It was a very good device five years ago when it was launched.

As I said earlier, I'll be interested to hear what you make of it when it arrives.

well my mum still uses hers daily here in the uk,every now and then i put a load of new books on for her via calibre. Battery still good for a couple of weeks,so it does not have any new tech but there is nothing at all wrong with reading on it, text is clear, page turns are not that slow, she uses a wee clip on light at night, It's good for simply reading a book!

Amazon appears to price match the $99 price for the PW. Just seen it when looking when the Voyage might be back in stock (dec 25th ). So right now both Kobo Aura and the Paperwhite are on sale for $99. There is no free sleep cover on the PW though.

Thanks Paul. By proofing you mean the same as proofreading, right? And how would ADE being old figure in to me not being able to proofread on it (the Sony)?

Not proofread, but see how it's actually going to look. Without the ability to have full justification, you won't know if you have your justification set properly for one. Some bugs have been fixed in later versions of ADE. I cannot say which ones for which versions.

The USB cord won't charge a thing without something to plug it into and not all USB charging ports are compatible with Sony Readers. It's not as easy as you think to find a USB charging port that will work to charge the 300. Sony Readers are finicky as to what works.

A PSP charger will work.

This one will work and it's cheap. I suggest you get it so you can charge your 300. It's only $5.09 with free shipping from Newegg.

I have never had a problem charging my prs300 over USB with phone chargers, from the computer. I don't own any iDevices/iChargers or Macs though, which may have non-standard usb specs.

Happy to help. Unless you have a compatible USB charger, finding one may not be easy and that's cheap enough to forgo the possible hassle.

Can I proof my books on a regular Kindle? (Not the PW.) And how about proofing for epubs on the less expensive Kobo Touch? Seems like nobody talks about the Touch. It lists for $79 and maybe it will go way down on Boxer Day. Isn't the Touch Kobo's version of the regular Kindle?

Rather than Aura and PW for $198 I'd prefer Touch and Kindle for $98. I don't read in the dark and that seems to be the big plus of the PW and Aura.

I can't speak to the older versions of the Kindle, but he Kobo Touch is very much a step down in quality versus the new devices. Even ignoring the light (which you won't think you need until you try using it even in lit rooms ), the screen tech on it is slower, greyer and generally less clear. If you're not comparing it to something else probably not a big deal. If you have a 2nd better device you'll notice it. I can't remember your exact use plan and if it's just checking out things, not heavy use it's probably fine, but if it's for daily use I'd spend the extra.

The Aura and PW both have higher resolution screen (1024x758) instead of 800x600. 800x600 is going out of fashion. Only one current Kindle is 800x600. The others are 1204x758 or higher.

So for the extra $20 for the Aura, you get a front light and a higher resolution screen, 4GB ram instead of 2GB, better battery. And most importantly, it's possible that the Touch may no longer be supported. The latest firmware was not released for the Touch. So yes, go with the Aura if you want to keep on being supported with new firmware. It's not worth a $20 savings to have a Reader that may not be supported.

You could go with the Kindle Touch Basic (just called Kindle at Amazon) for a price savings to preview your eBooks. As long as you have one device that has a higher resolution screen, then you'll know how any graphics you use (like the cover) will look.

So my recommendation to save money is to go with the Kobo Aura and the Kindle. The Kindle is $59 at Amazon right now and the Kobo Aura $99 at Chapters.

Thanks robko. Surprising that nobody's challenging the regular Kindle. Yeah, I don't really anticipating reading a ton on an ereader. Who knows though. There's so many good epubs online. Thanks for the insights.

Thanks JS. Did you mean only the basic Kindle was 800X600? (The PW and Voyage being higher.) Sounds like a plan. Think the Kindle will drop back to $49 maybe the day after Xmas or New Years? Will Aura ever go any lower than $99?
