Although, even with a headset, you still have to listen to his/her half of the conversation. Actually, I don't work well if other people are holding a conversation near me. That will bother me. That is not something I can tune out. I can tune out music, tv, construction noise, all sorts of stuff ... but not live conversation.

And now we all have people shouting at the tops of their lungs into their cellphones....
![]() Though I understand that may be worse here in the US than elsewhere. |

i used to be much less sensitive to noise. then i moved into this godforsaken building with a schoolyard full of shrieking hellions directly behind it, walls made of cigarette paper, and a never-ending stream of inconsiderate / unselfconscious neighbors and irascible babies, and my tolerance has been steadily eroded. now i frequently wear ear-plugs to sleep (even though they hurt my ears) and dj earphones all day long to work (although they also are uncomfortable after a while).
from time to time, on a weekend, the whole building will be miraculously silent all day, and i find myself making an unconscious effort to move very gently not to disrupt it, and listening to the silence as if it were music, appreciating it with a sort of desperate gratitude. when i'm working, i prefer quiet, especially if i have to concentrate on code or something, or else music that i've chosen (so, not the radio). i've found that radiohead is excellent for concentration. i've also found that if i start a project with a particular music, and i'm in the zone, then i have to keep listening to the same music until i want to stop working, or the spell will be broken. i definitely could not concentrate with the television on. since i didn't grow up with it i am now rather fascinated by it, in the sense, "fascinated like a rabbit by a snake" ; if it's in front of me i often can't take my eyes off it. i'm mostly glad that i didn't have television as a child, because i do think i did more interesting things instead of watch it, however on the other hand it means there is a whole set of cultural references common to my generation that i don't have at all, and as we've established people think i'm strange enough as it is. |

Wish I had a teleporter ... you could use the upstairs here in this house to work. Miles from anywhere ... no neighbors ... it's as quiet as a tomb most days. The silence is only broken by the occasional dog bark. I look out the window and all I see are trees, bushes and deer. At night, all you hear are crickets and frogs. My friends, the Moons, have a daughter who hates to stay at their house because it is "too quiet" at night and she needs to hear people around her in order to fall asleep. She also hates how dark it is. No street lights out here. If the moon isn't full or close to full, you better have a flashlight if you step outside. |

oh boy, i wish you had a teleporter too !!!! especially with the Infernal Baby in the building...
on the other hand, (you're going to think i'm crazy) i understand your friends' daughter. i like it to be quiet, but i think it would spook me to be so completely isolated, especially at night. i like knowing that there are people really close by to me (as long as i can't hear them !!), who would hear me if i shouted. you know, just in case. illustration of why i am reassured by knowing there are other people nearby, in the form of a funny story of cat (probably deliberately) messing with me. no wait, never mind, i'll post it in the animal thread and put a link here. it's too off topic. |

I never looked at it that way. Of course anyone who is stupid enough to come all the way out here in the middle of nowhere to mess with me ... has no freaking idea what he/she is in for. As Mr. T used to say "I pity da fool." |

Audio Books
Pardon the animal interruption...
Back to audio books. I always had problems falling asleep because my mind would be so active. So now, I stick an audio book in my mp3 player, hook up ONE ear bud, (the one not in the pillow) and play the book at the lowest setting, and I'm off to sleep before the first page is read. When I wake during the night, as I always do, the book puts me back to sleep immediately. When I turn over, I switch the bud to the other ear and right back to dreamland. BTW, this has to be a book I have read/listened to countless times. New books keep me awake as I have to know what is going to happen. So, yes I read while I sleep..... Alyson |

ha ok, i can understand that actually, if it's a book you've already read ; i also read at night to counter too much brain activity keeping me awake, although i don't think an audio book would be a good idea for me.
