BTW, in my school district, we had a teacher -- a middle school girls soccer coach and gym teacher -- who was allowed to continue to prowl the locker rooms for fourteen months after admitting to ICE that he was a pedophile. The school board decided to let him continue to teach after a nonpublic meeting. The minutes of that meeting were sealed for 99 years. He is in jail.

Oh pish posh, that was YEARS ago. Let's get the government to make a law that requires all those links deactivated to protect his reputation. Surely no one should have to take individual responsibility and suffer the consequences of his actions. Far better we legislate and regulate and control EVERYONE ELSE in society to make sure people like that are protected! We all, as was sagely noted somewhere above, have things in our past we'd like forgotten. It therefore is quite a reasonable proposal that we make everyone else change history and bury information to accommodate us, right? |

The idea of an expunged period of youth is interesting but seems to involve different issues from the mass deletion of unflattering reviews on search engines and media sites.
What seems especially hypocritical is Lazic's automatic dismissal of reviews as works of art. Why can't the artistic merits of a review be equal to or greater than those of the concert it covers? What if the performer is my nephew the parlor virtuoso and the reviewer happens to be Mark Twain, Charles Rosen or Virgil Thompson? Why doesn't an evocative, learnéd or witty review deserve to be made as available as the artist it castigates, mocks, demystifies or contextualizes? |

The right to be forgotten is a very dangerous thing if not correctly implemented.
It may affect the "collective memories" of people relying only on internet for their information. The danger is that whole blocks of information is deleted and therefore lost. Then some malevolent people may "create" a new history in place of the "deleted" one, something like in 1984 of Orwell. Delete - Fahrenheit 451, Create - 1984. I hate to go into conspiracy theories, but if one adds the "cloud" things and several other ideas, one cannot resist such temptation ... |

That isn't really a problem with the right to be forgotten so much as a problem with clueless people doing stupid things. And they will continue to be clueless and do stupid things regardless.
