Troy Chance returns in another riveting novel from the author of the critically acclaimed Learning to Swim

*Anthony Award nominee for Best Novel

Freelance writer Troy Chance is snapping photos of the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival ice palace when the ice-cutting machine falls silent. Encased in the frozen lake is the shadowy outline of a body—a man she knows.

A lurid news story goes viral, throwing suspicion on one of Troy's housemates. Troy is assigned to write an in-depth feature on the dead man, who turns out to be the son of a wealthy Connecticut family playing at a blue-collar life in this Adirondack village. As Troy digs deeper into his life and mysterious death—working with his bereaved sister, reclusive girlfriend, and helpful neighbor—a string of incidents makes it clear someone doesn't want the investigation to continue.

What Troy discovers threatens to shatter the serenity of these mountain towns, and she must decide which family secrets should be exposed, and how far her own loyalty can reach.
World Peace and Other 4th-Grade Achievements by John Hunter from Eamon Dolan/Houghton Mifflin Harcourt is $2.99 (US Kindle)

Add narration for a reduced price of $4.99 after you buy the Kindle book.

Product Description

Can playing a game lead to world peace? If it’s John Hunter’s World Peace Game, it just might. In Hunter’s classroom, students take on the roles of presidents, tribal leaders, diplomats, and military commanders. Through battles and negotiations, standoffs and summits, they strive to resolve a sequence of many-layered, interconnected scenarios, from nuclear proliferation to tribal warfare.

Now, Hunter shares inspiring stories from over thirty years of teaching the World Peace Game, revealing the principles of successful collaboration that people of any age can apply. He offers not only a forward-thinking report from the frontlines of American education, but also a generous blueprint for a world that bends toward cooperation rather than conflict.

In this deeply hopeful book, a visionary educator shows us what the future of education can be.

Off the Voortrekker Road by Barbara Bleiman from Amazon (£0.99) is the Amazon UK Kindle Daily Deal (November 10) *Wait for price to reflect discount before 1-clicking

Quote:
Product Description

OFF THE VOORTREKKER ROAD is a personal family story, a courtroom drama and a political narrative, casting a light on a pivotal moment in South Africa's history. It weaves together two narratives. In Cape Town, in 1958, a young Jewish lawyer, Jack Neuberger, prepares to defend a minister in the Dutch Reformed Church who stands accused of ‘immoral or indecent acts’ with a ‘non-white’ woman. The novel also transports us back to Jack’s childhood, when he sat silently on a sack of beans in his father's hardware store, the Handyhouse, bearing witness to the comings and goings of the colourful community of Parow and navigating his way across the wash of his parents’ turbulent marriage.

The novel spans the twenty years in which the National Party or “Nats” came to power and the apartheid movement gathered momentum. For adult Jack, the secret police are watching his every move, key testimonies are proving unreliable and his career and family are threatened. For young Jack, as well as finding a way of coping with the discord within his family, he struggles with his sense of self: how to be a good son, a good Jew, a good person or mensch and, most importantly, how to be loyal to his best childhood friend, Terence Mostert.

Years later, in a courtroom in Cape Town, this loyalty and Jack’s personal courage face the ultimate test, in a case which will impact upon those he loves, those he feels responsible for and future generations of South Africans.

Customer review: "This is a page-turning supernatural thriller with masterful writing, a compelling, fast-paced story, and smart, witty dialogue."

Albert Shipway is an ordinary guy who's made an extraordinary mistake...a mistake that has left a family in ruins. Unfortunately for Albert, he picked the wrong family.

Now he thinks the past is forgotten and today is just another day, another lunch, another order of kung pao chicken. Little does he know that he’s about to meet a little old lady who knows his greatest fear. A little old lady who knows what’s hiding in his heart. A little old lady who dishes up a big stew of supernatural revenge.

In just a matter of minutes, Albert’s simple life is about to be turned upside down. Indeed, Albert is about to enter a world where magic and evil lurk just beneath the fabric of southern California, where all his past choices have brewed a perfect storm of broken hearts, broken promises, and shattered families...and he's about to pay the ultimate price.

Unless he can start righting some wrongs...and fast.
The Light is the Darkness by Laird Barron from DarkFuse ($1.99) is the Kindle Sci-Fi / Fantasy Deal of the Day (November 10) *Wait for price to reflect discount before 1-clicking

Quote:
Product Description

Customer review: "Mr. Barron's stories incorporate the themes explored by H. P. Lovecraft in ways unlike any other writer working today."

Conrad Navarro is a champion of the Pageant, a gruesome modern day gladiatorial exhibition held in secret arenas across the globe. Indentured by a cabal of ultra-rich patrons, his world is one of blood and mayhem, an existence where savagery reigns supreme while mercy leads to annihilation.

Conrad's sister has vanished while traveling in Mexico. Imogene, a decorated special agent for the FBI, was hot on the trail of a legendary scientist whose vile eugenics experiments landed him on an international most-wanted list. Imogene left behind a sequence of bizarre clues that indicate she uncovered evidence of a Byzantine occult conspiracy against civilization itself -- a threat so vast and terrible, its ultimate fruition would herald an event more inimical to all terrestrial life than mere extinction.

Now, Conrad is on the hunt, searching for his missing sister while malign forces seek to manipulate and destroy him by turns. It is an odyssey that will send this man of war from the lush jungles of South America, to the debauched court of an Aegean Prince, to the blasted moonscape of the American desert as he becomes inexorably enmeshed within a web of primordial evil that stretches back unto prehistory. All the while struggling to maintain a vestige of humanity; for Conrad has gazed into an abyss where the light is the darkness, and he has begun the metamorphosis into something more than human.

Customer review: "Full of sound arguments and data, this is a very useful read for any entrepreneur or executive."

What do shale gas, Elon Musk’s Tesla, and the global apparel chain Zara share in common? In Resource Revolution, management experts Stefan Heck and Matt Rogers describe how each in its own way exemplifies a resource revolution—a use of natural resources so effective it defies conventional wisdom and enables breakthrough performance where others see only limits and shortcomings.

Resource Revolution shows how to take what is being seen as a worldwide crisis and turn it into the biggest business opportunity of the past one hundred years. The rapid urbanization of a new 2.5-billion-person middle class in Asia will create an unprecedented demand for oil, steel, land, food, water, cement, and other commodities over the next two decades. Heck and Rogers explore the ways in which innovators, including start-ups and global leaders from Cree to GE, have answered the challenge with practical steps to guide managers everywhere.

Customer review: "Whether a child is going through a difficult transition or simply learning to read chapter books, this is a great choice."

Age Level: 8 - 10 | Grade Level: 3 - 5

When Eleanor's beloved babysitter, Bibi, has to move away to take care of her ailing father, Eleanor must try to bear the summer without Bibi and prepare for the upcoming school year. Her new, less-than-perfect babysitter just isn't up to snuff, and she doesn't take care of things like Bibi used to. But as the school year looms, it's time for new beginnings. Eleanor soon realizes that she will always have Bibi, no matter how far away she is.

Written in a lyrical style with thoughtful and charming illustrations throughout, this remarkable debut novel tells a poignant story of friendship and the bittersweet feelings of growing up.

The Things They Cannot Say: Stories Soldiers Won't Tell You About What They've Seen, Done or Failed to Do in War by Kevin Sites from Harper Perennial is $1.99 (US Kindle)

Quote:
Product Description

What is it like to kill? What is it like to be under fire? How do you know what's right? What can you never forget?

In The Things They Cannot Say, award-winning journalist and author Kevin Sites asks these difficult questions of eleven soldiers and marines, who—by sharing the truth about their wars—display a rare courage that transcends battlefield heroics.

For each of these men, many of whom Sites first met while in Afghanistan and Iraq, the truth means something different. One struggles to recover from a head injury he believes has stolen his ability to love; another attempts to make amends for the killing of an innocent man; yet another finds respect for the enemy fighter who tried to kill him. Sites also shares the unsettling narrative of his own failures during war—including his complicity in a murder—and the redemptive powers of storytelling that saved him from a self-destructive downward spiral.

Thanks. It turns out that the 1st in J. Gregory Smith's Paul Chang mysteries was a freebie several years ago when it was still an AmazonEncore title, and I pulled it out of my archive and read enough of the opening chapters that I decided to take a chance on getting the 2nd & 3rd while they were on sale.

It’s 2011, and Carys agrees, with mixed feelings, to look after her mother after a fall. This decision unsettles everything—her job, her plans, and her relationship with Jack. Once home, she is drawn back into village life, into her family history hidden in the attic, and into the history of Plas Eden, the ramshackle great house that was so much part of her childhood. It was where, at 18, she forced herself to say goodbye to David Meredith, and she wonders how she will feel when they meet again.

In 1898, Ann is destitute and standing on London Bridge. She remembers her last visit to London, a spoiled, aristocratic bride, sure of the power of her youth and beauty. Now she is running from everything she trusted and she wonders if the river is her only option, or if the Meredith Charity Hospital will hide her.

The two women struggle with love, family duty, long-buried secrets, and their own creative ambitions, but over 100 years ago, Ann left a trail through North Wales, Cornwall, and London that may help Carys find her true path.

Greta Fields had planned to stay one night in Murray County, Oklahoma, to attend her brother's wedding, even though she thought he was making the biggest mistake of his life for the second time. But on her way out of town, she caused a three car pileup when she dropped her cell phone and tried to retrieve it while traveling ninety miles an hour. For her crime, she was forced to serve four months of community service in Sulphur, Oklahoma, with none other than that policeman she'd had words with at the reception acting as her escort to and from work. She almost opted for six months in jail rather than have to deal with him every day.

Kyle Parsons, a rancher and policeman in Sulphur, had looked across the outdoor wedding reception and figured he was staring at an angel straight from heaven. It didn't take him long to realize his first impression was dead wrong when it came to Greta Fields. His truck and trailer were part of the three vehicle pileup the morning after the wedding, and he lost a prize Angus bull that he hadn't had time to insure. To add insult to injury, the judge put him in charge of taking Greta to and from her community service job. He would have rather dealt with a hungry rattlesnake than that spoiled brat of a woman.

Greta can't wait to get back to her city life, and Kyle can't wait for her to go. Somehow their hearts didn't get the message.

Winston's War: A Novel of Conspiracy by Michael Dobbs from Sourcebooks Landmark ($1.99) is the Kindle Deal of the Day (November 11) *Wait for price to reflect discount before 1-clicking

Quote:
Product Description

Customer review: "Being a fan of Dobbs' House of Cards in its BBC incarnation, I had high hopes for this Churchill-set mystery. It surpassed them handily."

From Michael Dobbs, author of the book that inspired the smash hit Netflix series House of Cards, comes Winston's War, a thrilling novel about the dawn of WWII and Winston Churchill's rise to power.

At the beginning of WWII, Neville Chamberlain believes he has bought "peace for our time" from Adolph Hitler, who has just seized Czechoslovakia's Sudetenland. The English are alarmed by the huge German army, while the soldiers that would defend London don't even have steel helmets. For many, compromise and appeasement seem to be England's best defense.

But there are a few leaders who don't agree. Among them is Winston Churchill, who understands that the relentless march of fascism will be democracy's death knell. In October 1938, Churchill pleads his case in the press to the BBC's Guy Burgess. One of these two will become the most revered man of his time, and the other will be known as the greatest of traitors.

This stunning novel brings to life the surprising political intrigues that set the stage for World War II, and brings alive the passionate, grumpy, whiskey-drinking Winston Churchill, as he inspires his fellow countrymen to take on the world's mightiest army.

Customer review: "Zacks' book is a rare and intriguing chronicle of his travels and doings amidst the greatest and most courageous leaders of the last 50 years."

I was born the year Hitler came to power. There was no Israel. There was a Holocaust. Six million Jews were slaughtered for the crime of being born, and hardly a blip registered on the world's conscience. The world was indifferent - it pretended not to know.

Israel was created in 1948, and I decided I wanted to be part of the rebirth of the Land and the redemption of the People of Israel. That has been my passion . . . and my purpose. That was my defining moment.

I have had the privilege to work with some extraordinary and courageous people who taught me valuable lessons about leadership and life. These stories are first-hand accounts of how people - some famous, some not - followed their passion, lived their purpose, and aspired to be part of something greater than their selves. These people had the courage to seize their moment and make the world a better place, revealing valuable lessons on the path to a more rewarding life.

Even bullies can learn to share

Why should a large animal get away with bullying a smaller one? That's what happens when Elephant takes Hippo's spot in the pond, which causes Hippo to pick on Lion, Lion to pick on Leopard, and Leopard to pick on Monkey.

Vincent Nguyen's illustrations - a mix of watercolor, charcoal pencil, and digital techniques - enrich the story as Monkey asks his mother for advice, and she comes up with just the right solution to solve the problem.

Audible Daily Deal - What It Is Like to Go to War by Karl Marlantes and Bronson Pinchot (Narrator) for $2.95

Quote:
Publisher's Summary

From the author of the bestselling and award-winning Matterhorn comes a brilliant nonfiction book about war and the psychological and spiritual toll it takes on those who fight.

“I wrote this book primarily to come to terms with my own experience of combat. So far—reading, writing, thinking—that has taken over thirty years.”

In 1969, at the age of twenty-three, Karl Marlantes was dropped into the highland jungle of Vietnam, an inexperienced lieutenant in command of a platoon of forty marines who would live or die by his decisions. Marlantes survived, but like many of his brothers in arms, he has spent the last forty years dealing with his war experience. In his first work of nonfiction, Marlantes takes a deeply personal and candid look at what it is like to experience the ordeal of combat, critically examining how we might better prepare our soldiers for war.

Just as Matterhorn is already acclaimed a classic of war literature, What It Is Like to Go to War is set to become required reading for anyone—soldier or civilian—interested in this visceral and all-too-essential part of the human experience.

Karl Marlantes, a cum laude graduate of Yale University and Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, was a marine in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Navy Cross, the Bronze Star, two Navy Commendation Medals for valor, two Purple Hearts, and ten Air Medals. He has lived and traveled all over the world and now writes full time. He and his wife, Anne, have five children and live on a small lake in Washington.

We Were There: Revelations from the Dallas Doctors Who Attended to JFK on November 22, 1963 by Allen Childs MD from Skyhorse Publishing is $1.99 (US Kindle)

Quote:
Product Description

There are few days in American history so immortalized in public memory as November 22, 1963, the date of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination. Adding to the wealth of information about this tragic day is We Were There, a truly unique collection of firsthand accounts from the doctors and staff on scene at the hospital where JFK was immediately taken after he was shot.

With the help of his former fellow staff members at Parkland Memorial Hospital, Dr. Allen Childs recreates the horrific day, from the president’s arrival in Dallas to the public announcement of his death. Childs presents a multifaceted and sentimental reflection on the day and its aftermath.

In addition to detailing the sequence of events that transpired around JFK’s death, We Were There offers memories of the First Lady, insights on conspiracy theories revolving around the president’s assassination, and recollections of the death of Lee Harvey Oswald, who succumbed two days later in the same hospital where his own victim was pronounced dead.

A compelling, emotional read, We Were There pays tribute to a critical event in American modern history—and to a man whose death was mourned like no other.
The Secret Sentry by Matthew M. Aid from Bloomsbury Press is $2.99 (US Kindle)

Add narration for a reduced price of $3.99 after you buy the Kindle book.

Product Description

The first complete history of the National Security Agency, America's most powerful and secretive intelligence organization.

In February 2006, while researching this book, Matthew Aid uncovered a massive and secret document reclassification program revelation that made the front page of the New York Times. This was only one of the discoveries Aid has made during two decades of research in formerly top-secret documents.

In The Secret Sentry, Aid provides the first-ever full history of America's largest security apparatus, the National Security Agency. This comprehensive account traces the growth of the agency from 1945 to the present, through critical moments in its history, from the Cold War up to its ongoing involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq. Aid explores the agency's involvement in the Iraqi weapons intelligence disaster, where evidence that NSA officials called ambiguous was used as proof of Iraqi WMD capacity, and details the intense debate within the NSA over its unprecedented role, pressed by the Bush-Cheney administration, in spying on U.S. citizens.

Today, the NSA has become the most important source of intelligence for the U.S. government, providing 60 percent of the president's daily intelligence briefing. While James Bamford's New York Times best seller The Shadow Factory covered the NSA since 9/11, The Secret Sentry contains new information about every period since World War II. It provides a shadow history of global affairs, from the creation of Israel to the War on Terror.

Add narration for a reduced price of $12.99 after you buy the Kindle book.

Product Description

As America's Mercury Seven astronauts were launched on death-defying missions, television cameras focused on the brave smiles of their young wives. Overnight, these women were transformed from military spouses into American royalty. They had tea with Jackie Kennedy, appeared on the cover of Life magazine, and quickly grew into fashion icons.

Annie Glenn, with her picture-perfect marriage, was the envy of the other wives; JFK made it clear that platinum-blonde Rene Carpenter was his favorite; and licensed pilot Trudy Cooper arrived with a secret that needed to stay hidden from NASA. Together with the other wives they formed the Astronaut Wives Club, providing one another with support and friendship, coffee and cocktails.

As their celebrity rose--and as divorce and tragic death began to touch their lives--they continued to rally together, and forming bonds that would withstand the test of time, and they have stayed friends for over half a century. THE ASTRONAUT WIVES CLUB tells the real story of the women who stood beside some of the biggest heroes in American history.

Product Description

Have faith. I will find you.

Former NYPD detective Charlie "Bird" Parker is on the verge of madness. Tortured by the unsolved slayings of his wife and young daughter, he is a man consumed by guilt, regret, and the desire for revenge.

When his former partner asks him to track down a missing girl, Parker finds himself drawn into a world beyond his imagining - one where 30 year old killings remain shrouded in fear and lies, a world where the ghosts of the dead torment the living, a world haunted by the murderer responsible for the deaths in his family, a serial killer unlike any other, a monster who uses the human body to create works of art and takes faces as his prize. But the search awakens buried instincts in Parker: instincts for survival, for compassion, for love, and, ultimately, for killing.

Aided by a beautiful young psychologist and a pair of career criminals, he becomes the bait in a trap set in the humid bayous of Louisiana, a trap that threatens the lives of everyone in its reach. Driven by visions of the dead and the voice of an old black psychic who met a terrible end, Parker must seek a final, brutal confrontation with a murderer who has moved beyond all notions of humanity, who has set out to create a hell on earth: the serial killer known only as the Travelling Man.

In the tradition of classic American detective fiction, Every Dead Thing is a tense, richly-plotted thriller, filled with memorable characters and gripping action. It is also a profoundly moving novel, concerned with the nature of loyalty, of love, and of forgiveness. Lyrical and terrifying, it is an ambitious debut, triumphantly realized.

"It seemed a terrible shame to meet my end in Iowa; I couldn't imagine any where more disappointing to die. The scenery hadn't changed for weeks and I was slowly dissolving into stimulation-deprived madness. My current predicament, then – attempting to escape through cornfields from a gun-toting alcohol soaked rancher – was not something I expected."

Terrified at the prospect of a life spent behind a desk, without challenge or adventure, Leon took off to cross America on an overloaded bicycle packed with everything but common sense.

Over five months and 6,000 miles, he cycled from New York to Seattle and then on to the Mexican border, facing tornadoes, swollen river crossings and one hungry black bear along the way. But he also met kind strangers who offered their food, wisdom, hospitality and even the occasional local history lesson, and learned what happens when you take a chance and follow the scent of adventure.

Customer review: "Fascinating and powerful, this gripping account of life in Cuba under Fidel Castro's regime chronicles one honest man's journey towards freedom."

Love, loss, and courage

As a boy, Frank Mederos' grandfather teaches him to fish, to navigate the seas, and to think for himself, much-needed skills under the new Castro regime. When Frank is drafted into the army, he is soon promoted to the Special Forces, where he is privy to top military secrets. But young Frank has no sympathy for Fidel. He thirsts for freedom and longs to join his girlfriend who has left Cuba for America.

Frank yearns to defect, but his timing couldn't be worse. After two unsuccessful escape attempts, he learns that the departure of the next available boat conflicts with upcoming military exercises. If Frank stays, he will miss the boat. If he doesn't, he will be the object of a massive manhunt.

Problems abound: How will Frank escape the army base without being seen? Where will he hide until the boat comes? How can he outwit his commanding officer? And how can he elude hundreds of soldiers ordered to bring him back "dead or alive"?

Frank's true story, a tale of love, loss, and courage, will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.

Customer review: "Long overdue, this is an outstanding piece of work about the rarely mentioned military life of a true American hero."

“My father would feel honored by this book.” —Kelly Stewart Harcourt, daughter of Jimmy Stewart

Of all the celebrities who served their country during World War II -and they were legion -Jimmy Stewart was unique. On December 7th, when the attack on Pearl Harbor woke so many others to the reality of war, Stewart was already in uniform - as a private on guard duty south of San Francisco at the Army Air Corps Moffet Field. Seeing war on the horizon, Jimmy Stewart, at the height of his fame after Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and his Oscar-winning turn in The Phadelphia Story in 1940, had enlisted several months earlier.

Jimmy Stewart, Bomber Pilot chronicles his long journey to become a bomber pilot in combat. Author Starr Smith, the intelligence officer assigned to the movie star, recounts how Stewart's first battles were with the Air Corps high command, who insisted on keeping the naturally talented pilot out of harm's way as an instructor pilot for B-17 Flying Fortresses and B-24 Liberators. By 1944, however, Stewart managed to get assigned to a Liberator squadron that was deploying to England to join the mighty Eighth Air Force. Once in the thick of it, he rose to command his own squadron and flew twenty combat missions, including one to Berlin.

Customer review: "Any child who loves monsters will want to read this!"

Age Level: 4 - 8 | Grade Level: P - 8

Just before midnight, on the night of a full moon, a young barber stays out past his bedtime to go to work. Although his customers are mostly regulars, they are anything but normal-after all, even monsters need haircuts. Business is steady all night, and this barber is prepared for anything with his scissors, rotting tonic, horn polish, and stink wax. It's a tough job, but someone's got to help these creatures maintain their ghoulish good looks.

Perfect for Halloween, this is a hilarious story about a boy who follows in his father's footsteps . . . in his own monstrously unique way.
