Not much.
You root to escalate privileges. You jailbreak to allow running custom stuff. Either way, you want to gain control over your device. |

So what are you waiting for, jailbreak it.
![]() Does your device run a firmware >=5.6.x? Then you will have to do like the OP of this thread. If not, just install the jailbreak the usual way... |

As I understand it from the KT2 Exposed thread you use the MicroFTX, but this doesn't seem to be sold at the moment. Are there any other suitable UART to USB with 1.8V? It seems very hard to find one with the correct voltage. |

![]() The MicroFTX adapter I mentioned in the "KT2 Exposed" thread seems to be a one person project. So I suppose that it would be easy for the "Kindle Demand" to run them out-of-stock. An e-mail to that person, on his site, might yield information on his plans (to re-stock, etc). And if you do, an update here would be nice. - - - - - Yes, there is another "recommended" adapter - as a wire cable. Built by FTDI - It should be documented on this forum, and it should be indexed under the "Serial Port" section of the master index. A link to the master index can be found in the first post of the sticky "Where do I start?" thread. The FTDI adapter cable is more expensive, but it doesn't require the external 1v8 reference input. (And when this site started to "recommend" the FTDI cable, FTDI ran out of stock from the "Kindle Demand". Note that FTDI **is not** a one-person operation. Twobob actually contacted the factory and explained to them why all of their adapters had suddenly disappeared from the stock of their distributors, world-wide. They increased their production to meet the demand.) - - - - - The "KT2 Exposed" thread (or maybe this thread - I post too much) has been updated with a link to a thread with photos of where to get the 1v8 reference voltage on a PW2 board. - - - - - You might want to start your own thread (prefix: Hardware) where you can put all the current information that you gather along with the events of your efforts. That would also give people a single thread in which to post replies to any questions you have along the way. - - - - - Thanks for your post by the way. It is always nice to see someone ask questions **before** they run into trouble. ![]() Last edited by knc1; 04-12-2015 at 08:37 AM. |

Most USB2UART Bridges using 3,3V or 5V from USB.
The FTDI is a good choice with high modularity and voltagelevel choice. A good alternative is a bridge with a CP2104 chip from Silicon Labs. These USB to serial adapter supports also 1.8V and most bridges with this chip have a buildin jumper to plugin an external voltage for the logiclevels. just google for 'USB to UART Bridge CP2104' there are many hits. But it must be a cp2104, the cp2102 is not capable of 1,8V. |

Whatever thingy has replaced hyperterminal for Windoze. 2. The password is not "in" the python code, it will be the output of that python command line. 3. Character positions of a sub-string. Google up an introduction to python and after reading, the above (#2, #3) should be clear. Last edited by knc1; 07-03-2015 at 10:21 AM. |

3. -- "slice notation". Hope that clears it up for you.
![]() P.S. I recommend using `kindletool info $YOUR_SERIAL_NUMBER` -- it's designed to spit out passwords for you. kindletool Last edited by eschwartz; 07-03-2015 at 04:25 PM. |

I was guessing, I don't use python. And I also agree with the above suggestion, just use kindletool (from NiLuJi's snapshots thread). |

Ah -- I mentioned the name in the hope of confusing things through technical jargon. Indicating it is irrelevant, just run the forking command and if you want to actually understand how it works, a guide-to-rooting-your-Kindle is not the best place to learn python.

There is absolutely nothing else going on here this past week to write about.
So much so, that the 1 character typo in our new PW3 label is the big news. (That is the one that reads PW2 on dark brown, not the PW2 one on light brown.) |
