Audiobooks can take up a good amount of space. Take the audiobook of Command Authority. It takes up 419MB which is almost 1/2 a GB. Put on 4 audiobooks of similar size and you've run out of space if you can even put on 4. Might be only able to put on 3.
And therefore, rather than complain to the phone makers for not providing an SD slot, you figured it makes more sense to complain about the Amazon e-ink Kindle not having one?

My point still stands. Why are you trying to shoehorn the Kindle into being an MP3 player?

Also, go buy one of the dozens of specialist devices that are meant to play music and audiobooks and come with SD card slots.

Why force a specialist ebook reader to double as a music player?

And once you take audio out of the equation, even the old 2 GB was more than enough to hold a years supply of books, as I explained HERE.

My iPhone NEVER had an SD card slot of any kind. So I've not lost a feature.

The Kindle originally came with an SD slot and audio capability. Kindle also had audible compatibility. Amazon has been dropping useful features from Kindles. When Apple puts in an SD card slot and then takes it away, I'll complain about Apple. When Apple takes away audio capability, I'll complain about Apple.

You have a very odd way of looking at it then. Most people either worship at Apple's altar regardless, or complain about the lack of an SD card regardless of whether there used to be one or not.

And most people don't complain about the lack of an SD card on the Kindle, because they don't need such a frivolous feature.

I will listen to your complaint about the lack of an SD card when you also complain about the lack of an importance-conferring $300 price tag.

Because it wasn't a great idea. People just complained about it not working. Amazon took them up on it and removed it altogether. There is not and has never been a "Touch to Speak", however, the Text to Speech that did exist was a non-feature that few used. I don't really blame Amazon for getting rid of a feature that nobody used. Audiobooks are a whole lot better than TTS, anyway.

How do you know nobody used TTS that Amazon used to have? Why are you all for Amazon's taking away features that some (no idea how many some are) would use (if Amazon still had them) or did use when they had them?

Because
  1. that was Amazon's stated reason for getting rid of it,
  2. and so far their sales have not taken a hit,
  3. and the only protestation has come from a VERY small handful of people,
  4. and because of all the people I know (including myself) who have a TTS-enabled E-ink Kindle, only two of them know it exists (the other guy doesn't use it either),
  5. and because TTS is the kind of feature people absolutely will buy a tablet for.

I am very much for Amazon's right to take away a feature that costs more for them to create than it earns them profit. Including by way of goodwill, which this doesn't particularly engender, on account of the people who know it exists are in the minority and even they mostly don't care.

And it doesn't depend on the whims of a provider (be it Apple or any other) and it's also secure.
Amazon stores an unlimited amount of space for ebooks that you purchase from them, so no storage worries there. And I believe they will archive about 5GB of your personal documents that you send using your Kindle email thingy. As far as network access is concerned in relation to vacations, why not make it easy on yourself and simply download the couple of books that you are going to read on your Kindle ahead of time?

And you are ALWAYS subject to the whims of a service provider. If not a mobile network provider than an ISP at your house. I mean... you can't have ebooks delivered to your devices by magic... some sort of provider is required at some point!

The cloud works much the same. Lose your device or have it stolen, you just deactivate that one and activate/sync up your new device with whatever stuff you want on it. And you can do that even if you are nowhere near your home archive, as long as you can get some internet.

Depends on what kind of cloud service we are talking about. Something like Google Drive is a server "elsewhere" that you don't control, but they don't own your data that you store in your Drive, and they can't use your files or give other people access to them.

If you are talking something like Netflix, well... you never own any of that, you just "rent" access to their library.

For something like Amazon storing the ebooks you license from them in an online cloud archive, well... they stipulate the rules in their TOS. And you are allowed to download the actual book files to keep a local cache.

Oh? So how many of those audiobooks can you hold, on 3.5 GB of memory?

Once again, tablets are the superior device (in both the ability to render audio, and the ability to hold the files), and Amazon recognizes that. Tablets are geared towards audio, e-ink ereaders are NOT!

I was unaware that the K3 ever offered Immersion Reading. As this is a feature of the firmware...

I've said the following earlier in this thread so you should already have a rough estimate to your question.

I would rather have More onboard space than SD Card ... Every time I use the dang SD on my Sansa Clip the books become scrambled! Even when I have more than 1 audible no others on the Clip they scramble. At least the K3 keeps them straight & with decent speakers & battery life!

Wolf not sure how big the Audibles are but the real books are about 800 pages.

Oh yeah. The e-ink Kindles should all be bumped up to 16 GB storage just so a minority of people can listen to audiobooks on their all-handheld-devices-must-have-the-full-capabilities-of-a-tablet ereader.

That doesn't sound right. Are they badly indexed? They should show up as an audiobook and get linked together though the metadata, IIRC.
