Has anyone who does not have Amazon Prime been able to successfully install the apps and watch Amazon instant videos?

I'm having no luck on my Acer A100 tablet. I installed the correct (non-tablet) Amazon shopping app and chose a free video to watch, but I didn't get prompted to install the video app so it won't play. I've deleted/reinstalled the app several times and still no luck. I don't have Amazon Prime, so that may be the problem. Or perhaps it just won't work on this tablet?

You don't have to wait to be prompted to install the instant video app, just search the amazon app store and install it.

Thanks for trying to help!

I was able to get it to work on my 10" Acer A500 tablet, but the video quality's so poor that it's useless. I suspect that's because the video app wasn't intended for larger tablets since I have no problems streaming other videos.

I am unable to install the Prime Instant Video app on my 7" Acer A100 tablet. The app doesn't come up in search results from the Appstore app, and it isn't shown in my cloud apps from that tablet. I tried sideloading the video apk taken from my A500, but that doesn't work either. The shopping apk installs fine on the A100, but the other one (specifically for video) won't install. I get the message "There is a problem parsing the package." Doesn't seem like it's going to work on the smaller tablet. Oh, well.

No belligerence here. Amazon seems to think they know exactly what they are doing when in fact I think Google will win this war. I will likely not renew my Prime membership since I cannot use the Instant Video perk with Chromecast.
Amazon knows what they have done (too little too late), and some of us will vote with our wallets. Let's open things up a bit. Amazon can continue to profit by selling/renting digital media and general merchandise w/o insisting we purchase their readers and dongles to consume media.
I like tomsem am an open source advocate. I enjoy Google gadgets especially when they are priced below the competition.

There's also a link to the apk in the first post if you want to give it one more try.

I may try that sometime, but I've given up for today. At least I was able to confirm that you don't need an Amazon Prime membership in order to use the video app.

Again, thanks for your help.

I was a long time subscriber to Lovefilm in the UK, now Amazon video, and I'm a Prime customer. The delay in bringing Amazon instant video to Android encouraged me to try out Netflix.

Netflix is great. Chromecast was the icing on the cake.

Amazon have to make this work really well to tempt me back now, and I suspect there are a lot of people like me.

By "really well" I mean that Amazon Video needs to be an app in the Google Play store that doesn't need any other app to run, that looks good and runs smoothly on a tablet, and it needs Chromecast support so that I can throw the content to the TV as easily as I can with Netflix.

Note I'm talking about usage here, not necessarily subscription. As long as I keep up my Prime membership, I have access to Amazon video, but I have never, ever used it other than trying it out at first on my desktop PC.

I finally got it to work but it was a real PITA! Shame on Amazon for making it so difficult.

Hmm.

The two day shipping is the reason we have Prime, but our Roku box can play Amazon video, and it is distributed to every TV in my house, so we find our selves watching Prime video more and more lately, especially when our kids have all the Netflix streams tied up.

But on my portable devices, even our Fires, it's almost never used.
On my phone, where I have it working "the old way" as I mentioned above, I don't think I've ever actually used it, other than to show people that it works.

Now that I've been playing with the official app for a little bit, I've concluded that the unofficial way is better.

The official app gives me fuzzy video and crashes a lot. The unofficial way crashes less and offer a higher resolution stream.

The one day shipping in the UK is the reason we have Prime. If Amazon video had been available on our Android tablets, Chromebooks, Chromecast, PVR or WDTV Live boxes then we'd be using it. They all have Netflix.

I like Amazon, but they've been slow getting this rolled out in the UK at least.

I intended no belligerence, I'm just disappointed with implementation. I like Amazon's services, I like Google's services. But Amazon, for whatever reasons, has not delivered a good experience of Amazon Instant Video on Android. The iOS app is great, and was from day one. So they know how to do this right.

Maybe it is the best they can do, due to lack of cooperation on the part of Google. And fortunately I have other ways of consuming video from Amazon. I just won't be using this method.

I've used Appstore from day one but over time have used it less and less on my Android devices. I just prefer getting everything from Google Play. It doesn't offer much value for me.
