Big Markdown on Halley's Bible Handbook (NIV)

This is a real classic. However, it has been revised repeatedly since it was first published, which was . . . well, a long time ago--it's now in its 25th edition. It's chock-full of great information about the Bible. It takes a conservative, "fundamentalist" view of the Bible.

Halley's Bible Handbook with the New International Version. By Henry H. Halley. Print list price $15.99; digital list price $9.78?; Kindle price now $3.99. HarperCollins Publishing. 864 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Halleys-Bible-...tional+Version.

My posting of this book does not necessarily indicate my agreement with any doctrinal positions taken in the book.

Book Description
Clear . . . Simple . . . Easy to read -- This world-renowned Bible handbook is updated and revised to provide even greater clarity, insight, and usefulness. Now with NIV text! Do you need help understanding the Bible? Halley's Bible Handbook with the New International Version makes the Bible's wisdom and message accessible to you. Whether you've never read the Bible before or have read it many times, you'll find insights here that can give you a firm grasp of God's Word. You'll develop an appreciation for the cultural, religious, and geographic settings in which the story of the Bible unfolds. You'll see how its different themes fit together in a remarkable way. And you'll see the heart of God and the person of Jesus Christ revealed from Genesis to Revelation. Written for both mind and heart, this completely revised, updated, and expanded 25th edition of Halley's Bible Handbook retains Dr. Halley's highly personal style. It features: - All-new maps, photographs, and illustrations - Contemporary design - Bible references in easy-to-read, best-selling New International Version (NIV) Practical Bible reading programs - Helpful tips for Bible study - Fascinating archaeological information - Easy-to-understand sections on how we got the Bible and on church history - Improved indexes.

A Zondervan/HC Study Bible for Families, which Just Has Been Marked Way, Way Down

There's just been still another slate of "study Bibles" which have been marked down by Zondervan/HarperCollins and Thomas Nelson (or by Amazon, whoever is the one doing such things). I had no idea that there were so many study Bibles in print!

Anyway, of the most recent study Bible markdowns, this study Bible seemed to me like one of the better ones. And the markdown on this one is a whopping 88%. Wow!

The NIV Family Reading Bible: A Joyful Discovery: Explore God's Word Together. Zondervan/HarperCollins. Rated 4 1/2 stars from 32 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $39.99; digital list price $26.99; Kindle price now $4.99. Zondervan/HarperCollins, publisher. 1376 pages. http://www.amazon.com/NIV-Family-Rea...+Word+Together.

My posting of this book does not necessarily mean that I agree with any doctrinal positions taken in the non-Bible part of the book.

Book Description
The NIV Family Reading Bible is the perfect tool for you to use to lead your family through the Bible together. Designed for parents like you, the Family Reading Bible provides a way for your family to engage and understand the Bible together. It helps you use the Bible itself as your family devotional tool. A reading system with three easy-to-use paths ("Short Path," "Long Path," and "Off the Beaten Path") accommodates children of various ages and stages; reading plans direct you to Bible stories and events in the sequence in which they occurred; and readings of manageable length along with age-appropriate, engaging questions encourage and maintain your children’s interest in God’s Word. Enjoy your journey as you discover God’s Word with your kids. NIV ©2011. The New International Version (NIV) translation of the Bible is the world’s most popular modern-English Bible—easy to understand, yet rich with the detail found in the original languages.

Get a Free Commentary/Bible Study Guidebook on the Book of Revelation

Get a free ebook on the book of Revelation. The book is part commentary and part bible class guidebook.

It is published and offered by the Wesleyan Publishing House. The book is a part of a series called "Wesley Bible Studies." This book appears to be the first title printed of the series and this free ebook appears to be a way of introducing the series to the public.

I have downloaded this ebook on Revelation, and looked over it some. The book is well-written and written on a "layman's" level, so it is easy to understand. The introduction and comments on the text are insightful.

This blurb from part of WPH's promotional material for the series describes the books of the series very well: "The Wesley Bible Studies series provides a thoughtful and powerful thirteen-week survey of key Scriptures, combining accessible commentary from contemporary teachers with integrated highlights from the hymns, life experiences, and complete writings of John and Charles Wesley. And for each week, creative and engaging questions likewise foster deeper fellowship and growth."

This freebie ebook of the Wesley Bible Studies, at least, is available only in pdf.

There is a direct link to the ebook, but WPH asks people downloading the ebook not to share that link. I will respect their wishes. So, go here: http://wesleyan.us2.list-manage.com/...&id=4eb413cffd. A short form will ask for your name and email address, and by requesting the ebook you will be added to WPH's mailing list. After sending that form, you will get an email message with a direct link to the ebook.

My posting of this book does not necessarily mean that I agree with any doctrinal position taken in the book.

I just got an email about the HarperCollins religious book sale. The email included a link to the sale page listing twenty books for $2.99. Prices are good until November 21.

I ended up buying a few more.

All Volumes of the New International Version Application Commentary Now on Sale

HarperCollins/Zondervan has put all of their NIV Application Commentaries (NIVAC) on sale for $4.99. If I counted correctly, that makes 32 volumes.

All 27 "books" of the New Testament are represented in these commentaries; however, not all of the 39 books of the Old Testament have NIVAC commentaries for them yet.

The commentary series seeks to bring out the meaning of the Biblical text. However, as the name of the series suggests, it also endeavors to make practical application of the Biblical text, and it does more so than the typical commentary.

You can follow this link to buy one or more of the volumes: http://media.harpercollinschristian.com/page/32/. If you click on "buy now," you'll see links for three different retailers from which you can choose. A "heads-up": Amazon sometimes will have a price of
$4.27 on a particular volume instead of $4.99.

How good are these commentaries? Well, like any other set of commentaries which uses multiple authors (that's the overwhelming majority of them), the quality of the content varies from one volume to another. However, I noticed that most, if not all, of the NIVAC volumes have high ratings at Amazon. Also, in the little bit of research that I did, I kept noticing that the authors on different books of the Bible frequently had written commentaries on the same book(s) of the Bible for other publishers and/or series.. What that says to me is that the volumes of the NIVAC are written by experts on their respective books of the Bible.

B&H has put a new set of academic books on sale. These are $2.99 instead of the $.99 that I got spoiled on, but I'll probably spring for one, anyway. So far, prices are updated at Christianbook, Barnes & Noble and Amazon. Christianbook has DRM-free epubs, so I'm linking there.

The Problem of Evil: The Challenge to Essential Christian Beliefs by Jeremy A. Evans

There are a few others that were either on sale before or don't suit my fancy, so here's a list of B&H books sorted by price at Barnes & Noble if you want to browse.

Thanks, Diffulgia. Great finds! And, I'm glad to see you back.

Something strange . . . a link to the webpage with the B&N list didn't appear in your post on my view of the post. However, when I preview this post, with your quote above, the link does appear. I don't know what's going on, but in case anyone else has an issue with seeing the link, here's another one: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/s/?sor...book&view=list.

After your post, I went rummaging around, as I am wont to do, and discovered another one of the Exegetical Guide to the Greek New Testament series on sale. It's not quite as large and not quite as good a markdown/price as the one on James, but some of you may be interested anyway. It's 1 Peter (Exegetical Guide to the Greek New Testament) and the Kindle/mobi is $3.99 at the present moment. Here's the Amazon linky: http://www.amazon.com/Peter-Exegetic...w+Testament%29.

The NIV First-Century Study Bible: Explore Scripture in Its Jewish and Early Christian Context by Kent Dobson is $7.99. I'd been waiting for this one to go on sale. It's similar to the Archaeological Study Bible and has a lot of interesting articles. Be warned, though, that the epub weighs in at 74MB. If you're on a slow connection, the download will take a while.

B&N Amazon.

There are 31 other NIVs on sale for $7.99, as well. At the moment, this link lists them at Barnes & Noble. They're also on sale at Christianbook and Amazon. The prices haven't updated yet at Kobo, but I expect that they will.

Big Markdown on The Case for Christ Study Bible

This is one of the "other" 31 study Bibles that Difflugia mentioned in his post above. It "stood out" to me, for several reasons.

The Case for Christ Study Bible: Investigating the Evidence for Belief. By Lee Strobel. Rate 4 1/2 stars from 61 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $34.99; digital list(?) price $16.13; Kindle price now $7.99. Zondervan/HarperCollins Publishing, publisher. 1888 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Case-Christ-St...nce+for+Belief.

Book Description
Drawn from Lee Strobel's own experiences as a former atheist engaged in a thorough search for truth, the articles and notes throughout The Case for Christ Study Bible provide a solid explanation of where the historical and scientific evidence point - toward the existence of a compassionate Creator God and his Son, Jesus, the Savior. The Case for Christ Study Bible features more than 500 notes and articles, including: A.) The Case for a Creator: highlighting the wonders of creation and demonstrating how the scientific evidence supports belief in an all-powerful Creator. B.) The Case for the Bible: exploring the character of the Bible, the extra-biblical evidence that corroborates scripture, and apparent contradictions. C.) The Case for Christ: investigating Jesus' claims, Messianic identity, deity, and resurrection. D.) And much more. The Good News of the Gospel transformed the life of this former atheist. It can do the same for others who commit to examining the evidence for themselves.

Rose Publishing BIG Early Black Friday Sale and FREE pamphlet.

UPDATE: I just found out, from shopping the sale, that almost none of the digital items are reduced from their usual prices or, at most, only a little bit. The physical versions are reduced. There is a selection of PowerPoints that are reduced in price, it seems, and the downloads are actually a little cheaper than the physical counterparts. I apologize for the misinformation. Make sure that you do get the free pamphlet, though, if you're interested in it--it looks like a winner.

Rose Publishing has a Black Friday sale (what store in the United States doesn't? But I digress). Called the "Early Bird" sale (I suppose because it has already started), it offers 99 cent pamphlets (they're usually $3.99 or so), $5 books, bundle deals, and more.

The email that I got about the sale warns that inventory for the sale is limited and that items are susceptible to selling out. Regardless, the sale ends Monday, December 1.

Also, Rose is giving away a free pamphlet on the love passage in 1 Corinthians 13. "Packed with section-by-section commentary, charts, and simple summaries, this encouraging pamphlet explains the 15 keys to loving others and reveals what love is (and what it is not). It features practical reflection questions and application steps to help you grow in your ability to love others with "no strings attached" and will help you learn how to spot the pitfalls that can sabotage relationships, such as envy, selfishness, and pride. It contains incredible insight for all relationships— marriage, friendship, family, and more!" There is a banner add near the top of the webpage, whose address that I'm about to give you, with an embedded link to that freebie. It is in pdf (meh), but one good thing about it is that you're allowed to print up to 3 copies from that one "purchase."

Here's the linkage: http://rose-publishing.com.

I think that that covers everything. If not, I'm sure that someone will let me know about it. hahaha

Now I'm going to the sale myself, to try to get things that I want before they run out.

Quote:
The Christmas season is often one of the busiest and most stressful times of the year, and it’s easy to lose sight of what makes it special. Helping us refocus on what’s truly important, well-known pastor and author John Piper leads readers through twenty-four short meditations on Advent. The devotionals—drawn from Piper’s extensive preaching and teaching ministry—lead readers to ponder afresh the birth of Jesus, Israel’s long-awaited Messiah and the Savior of the world. Reflecting on several Scriptural texts, this accessible volume aims to direct individuals, families, and churches to the most glorious dawning of indestructible joy the world has ever seen: the incarnation of the Son of God.
