Or as Calvin said of Hobbs: "Cats are sharp on five out of six ends."

Mobileread does not allow any discussion whatsoever about how to remove DRM from copyrighted ebooks.

This thread is now closed.

This appeared after one post was posted in a thread asking for help on how to remove DRM. Does anyone here not know that Apprentice Alf's Tools are for DRM removal. Why the double standard?

Has anybody actually asked on how to remove DRM? Last I checked we talked about cats scratches and horse ends (both mouth and butt).

It is allowed to ask, as for the answer a simple: "google apprentice alf" is all that is allowed. None of any tools (if needed, I am not sure) nor specific instructions are here on MR.

You seen mods post here, right? If they had a problem they would have closed and possibly delete a long time ago.

Exactly so. The exact wording in the Guidelines is

"It is our policy that while DRM removal may be discussed in the abstract, providing detailed how-to instructions, uploading of DRM-removal tools, or linking to sites where these tools or detailed instructions are provided is forbidden at MobileRead."

That's what I've always understood too. There is a wide difference between acknowledging that the tools exist and going into detail about how to make use of them just as there is a wide difference between saying that guns are used in bank robberies and discussing how to go about robbing a particular bank, etc.

Here in New Jersey we call mountain lions "training pets." And, yes, our fruitcake (well, one of our many fruitcakes) had permits for her tigers, too!

I'd love to see a bug report filed for some software now saying "Ate the neighbor's cat" just to see how the developer responds.

Don't have to worry about that myself, if the neighbor had a cat all the dogs running around the neighborhood would have eaten it first.

There's an entire big cat sanctuary not too far from where I am in Tennessee. Looking at their site, they appear to have a LOT of them too.

I thought the quoted statement was a cover-your-ass statement to satisfy the lawyers. Looking at the first page(s) of this thread, it goes from help installing, to undertanding the runtime requirements, ... And than I stopped reading.

Doesn't sound very abstract to me, YMMV.

Try giving someone detailed help with DRM removal and you'll quickly discover the error of that belief. It's something we take very seriously indeed.

This is a very old example from 2009:

http://www.zdnet.de/41001742/amazon-...er-kindle-vor/

Sorry, the article is in German, but it says that Amazon took legal pressure against MobileRead because the forum had a link to a tool to remove drm. It may be an old example, it may be a small example, but it shows that some companies will take action against anything drm-removal and I'm afraid there have been more actions like this "behind the scene".

So, perhaps the "double standard" is the best possible compromise.

The only things you'll find regarding DRM are hints, such as:

Google Apprentice Alf and install the plugins.
Use ADE 2..01 instead of 3.x.
Etc....

I've had some posts removed and accompanied by a warning in the past, in which my hints were indeed on top of the line.... and inclining forward as well. (Like a child leaning over a doorstep not to be crossed to try and get at the cookie jar.)

Give specific download, install and troubleshoot instructions on Alf's Tools, and you'll probably be banned for a few days.

Here is a post, which included a quote from you where the original post appears to have been deleted.

And there was another post referring to a screen shot, which apparently was deleted.

I guess different people/sites have different interpretations for words like "detailed", and "help with DRM removal". I would consider help with the tools installation roughly equivalent to help with the tools themselves, so I would consider MR policy a 6.2 on the seriousness scale (on a scale of 1 to 10).
