I know this might seem like topic drift, but it's not. Those Star Wars elements most definitely suck and blow.

Maybe there is a distortion in their space/time caused by the car making a y turn and it causes an unwinding of their reality which then rewinds into a new pattern at the end of the turn.

I think these people would be highly intelligent, and though they might have had a strongly emotional history they would now be strictly logical. I also think that they probably have pointy ears.

Maybe it could be more of a fantasy story, where their military uses magic talismans to bring good fortune.
For example, if a general has a fire stone it means a good year.

Perhaps one of the groups of 'beings' could be the order of the steel belt. Sort of a quasi religious order that tries to keep some sort of order in their society.
