FYI.. All(?)/Most(?) of these Winston Churchill books from Rosetta are available for free from Kindle Owners Lending Library. Only one book/month, but an easy and cheap way to read these books.

Play Golf Like Ben Hogan! Well, Buy and Read His Book Anyway

The last time that I quit playing golf I said that I would never play it again, and I gave away my clubs. But, this book looks so interesting and is such a great deal, that I just might buy it, read it, and, who knows, take up golf again. Stranger things have happened.

Ben Hogan's Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf. By Ben Hogan; Herbert Warren Wind. Rated 5 stars from 60 reviews at the present moment. Digital list price $9.99; Kindle price now $0.99. http://www.amazon.com/Ben-Hogans-Fiv...entals+of+Golf.

Book Description
Over fifty years later, Ben Hogan’s book Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf is still considered one of the premier instructional books on the fundamentals of the game of golf. Renowned for his swing, Ben Hogan methodically describes his technique through his Lessons and the beautiful illustrations drawn by Anthony Ravielli. Whether you are a beginner or a pro, this famous book is a must-have reference guide for any golfer.

About the Author
Ben Hogan won 63 PGA Tour tournaments and 71 overall as a professional golfer in his storied career. These include 4 U.S. Opens, 2 Masters, 2 PGA Championships and a British Open victory in the only one he ever entered. He was also Player of the year 4 times and never lost a Ryder Cup match.

D-Day: June 6, 1944: The Climactic Battle of World War II by Stephen E. Ambrose has dropped to $2.99 at Amazon US & Google
Quote:
D-Day is the epic story of men at the most demanding moment of their lives, when the horrors, complexities, and triumphs of life are laid bare. Distinguished historian Stephen E. Ambrose portrays the faces of courage and heroism, fear and determination—what Eisenhower called “the fury of an aroused democracy”—that shaped the victory of the citizen soldiers whom Hitler had disparaged.Drawing on more than 1,400 interviews with American, British, Canadian, French, and German veterans, Ambrose reveals how the original plans for the invasion had to be abandoned, and how enlisted men and junior officers acted on their own initiative when they realized that nothing was as they were told it would be.

The action begins at midnight, June 5/6, when the first British and American airborne troops jumped into France. It ends at midnight June 6/7. Focusing on those pivotal twenty-four hours, it moves from the level of Supreme Commander to that of a French child, from General Omar Bradley to an American paratrooper, from Field Marshal Montgomery to a German sergeant.

Learn to Speak Chinese Overnight for 99 Cents

I just found this one interesting, that's all. I bought it, even though it's in a subject area of which I don't usually buy books. And as miser . . . er . . . I mean thrifty as I am, that says a lot.

I wonder about the practicality of it. I mean, in every Chinese restaurant that I've been in, at least one of the staff knew enough English that I could communicate in English. Maybe the book is intended for travelers to China? Too, learning all 246 pages of material in this book overnight is more than a little ambitious unless you have a photographic memory, don't you think? Of course, I hear that overnight in the Arctic or Antarctica can be several months long.

I'm beginning to wonder now if I shouldn't have made this book a "Funny Kindle of the Day (or Whenever)" . . . .

Speak Chinese in a Chinese Restaurant: Speak Chinese Overnight. By Melody Lu. Rated 5 stars, but from only 3 reviews at the present time (this was published just about a week ago). Kindle price now $0.99. http://www.amazon.com/Speak-Chinese-...nese+Overnight.

Kindle Freebie on the Investigation of the Zodiac Killer

I Am Not Sick I Am Insane: An Online Investigation into the Zodiac Killer. By Craig Fraley. Not currently rated at Amazon (the book was published just over a week ago). Digital list price $4.99; Kindle price now $0.00. http://www.amazon.com/not-sick-am%C2...y+Craig+Fraley. 629 pages!

Book Description
How much evidence does a criminal have to provide to ensure his capture? In today’s world of CSI it could be as little as a single strand of hair.

From 1963 to 1969, a killer murdered at least half a dozen people, across five California jurisdictions, and invited the world to play in his cat-and-mouse, catch-me-if-you-can game by taunting the police and newspapers with: phone calls, letters, postcards, and cryptograms. He left behind: fingerprints, handwriting samples, eyewitnesses, ballistics, footprints, tire tracks, even DNA, and was never caught.

Never before in the annals of American crime, has one suspect provided so much evidence and still avoided capture. Using the killer’s own words, police reports, newspaper articles and eyewitness testimony, this online investigation tells the story of America’s most famous unidentified killer who gave himself the name, ZODIAC.

First Blood: The Battle of the Kasserine Pass, 1943 by Charles Whiting is free at
Amazon US | Amazon CA | Amazon UK
Quote:
For a few weeks in February 1943, the action in and around a remote mountain village in North Africa held the attention of the whole world.

At Kasserine in French Tunisia, a major US army met the Germans for the first time in battle, and was defeated.

In the Pass at Kasserine, the US II Corps, 30,000 inexperienced young American soldiers, commanded by generals who had last seen action 25 years before, met Rommel's veterans of the Afrika Korps.

Not only were the lives of these young Americans, and those of the French and British soldiers who rushed to their support, at stake, but as they reeled back under the blow other vital questions were being asked.

Could the Americans stand up to the German veterans? How good was the GIs' training?

Could their generals really command in combat after a quarter of a century of garrison duty?

Most important of all, would these same Americans be capable of invading Fortress Europe?

This inauspicious beginning to a vital campaign rocked US Military confidence and the lessons learned were harsh.

Kasserine brought together the commanders who would finally fight that decisive campaign in N. W. Europe: Eisenhower, badly beaten in his first engagement and fearful for his career; `Blood an' Guts' Patton, already nearly 60, desperate for glory and busy emerging as the saviour of the reputation of the US Army; Rommel the Desert Fox, weary and sick, achieving his final victory of the war; and 'smiling Albert' Kesselring, who did not understand the meaning of defeat, fighting on to the bitter end.

Charles Whiting has written a hard-hitting and well constructed account of the events leading up to the Battle of Kasserine and of the battle itself. Once again he reveals all the skills that make him one of our most popular World War II historians.

Charles Whiting is the author of numerous history books on the Second World War. Under the pen name of Leo Kessler he also wrote a series of bestselling military thrillers, including ‘Guns at Cassino’ and ‘Valley of the Assassins’.

Endeavour Press is the UK's leading independent publisher of digital books.

WW1 never has gotten the attention that WW2 has. I'm "sure" that the number of books published, for example, on WW2 far exceeds the number of WW1 books published. I can think of several reasons, just off the top of my head, for that, but I won't bore you or other Mobilereaders with them. Unless you want to be bored, of course. haha

True, but there are plenty of World War 1 books, some for a pretty decent price.

Free--The Simple Guide to the World Cup 2014!

NoiseTrade has just published (or announced, as the case may be) several new books. One that I felt was very much worth posting, because of its timeliness, is the following.

NoiseTrade distributes free music and ebooks. I think that everything that they offer is "free." However, you are encouraged to leave a tip of whatever amount that you want. Let me reiterate: You don't have to tip to obtain the music and ebooks.

I know that with the World Cup thingie going on right now the release/announcement of this little (30 page) book is very timely on their part. Frankly, I have no interest in soccer; I would just as soon watch paint dry. And what really gets me bent out of shape is when they call it "football!" Football is what we predominantly play here in the United States and with an oblong ball! And, no I'm not opinionated! (haha) However, I realize that some of you out there in Mobilereader land may like soccer and might even be watching the World Cup [ack!]. So, I felt like it would be a nice thing to do to post this book.

I don't know how good the book is--I didn't see any ratings. If you don't like the book, I'll give you your money back (provided that you didn't leave a tip).

The Simple Guide to the World Cup 2014. By Chris Scott. Available as an ePub or mobi (Amazon Kindle format), each $0.00 unless you want to leave a tip. http://books.noisetrade.com/tsgtpubl...-the-world-cup.

Book Description
An awesome way to learn about all the teams competing in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, short, sweet and simple guide to all the teams. You will be able to tell your friends how each team qualified, who are the players to watch and how the teams have done in the past. Who does have the best record in world cup history?

A fairly recent translation of Marcus Aurelius from Modern Library. $0.99 at Amazon US. Marcus Aurelius - Meditations

The reviews are, of course, a jumble of various editions of the work. The translator seems to use a simple and direct English that some people found off-putting. Others found it refreshing.

The review that comes up as most helpful describes this edition. Reading it and the comments should give you a sense of the reactions.
