Untill now ebook revolution was restricted to the western world , but it is catching up in SEA country like India. And Major credit goes to Flipkart.com and amazon.in .
The pricing plays a major role here . It was a time in 2005-2006 the price of ebook in EPUB format was more than Print . Now these companies have realized this and are keeping the price of eBooks lower than print books. This is slowly decreasing Piracy here. And to keep on growing these companies must do what baenebooks do. (I know Most Top authors won't agree ). I found their T&C quite interesting. Here it goes " Digital Rights Management (DRM) and our reasons for not implementing it Digital rights management restricts the number of formats in which you can enjoy electronic media you have purchased. At Baen, we believe that when you purchase an Ebook, you should be able to access that book however you choose. For that reason, we sell only DRM-free Ebooks -- when you purchase one you have access to any and all formats we offer. What does that mean for you? If you get a new eReader that uses a different format than the one you had when you built your Baen Ebook library, you can download your Ebooks again in the new format for no additional charge. If you have several eReaders, you can download your books to them all; this lets you read your favorite Baen Ebooks when you're at home with your favorite reader, on the go with your mobile device, or anywhere with any other device. Once you've purchased the Ebook, you've paid for your right to enjoy it. We try to make it as easy to do that as we can. As long as you purchased it through our website and it shows up in your My Books list you can download to your heart's content. Enjoy." |

As has been said repeatedly in this thread, DRM has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not a book is licensed or sold. You're still buying a licence, regardless of whether or not a book has DRM.

"UPDATE: O’Donnell shared more details about his experience in the comments section of The Digital Reader blog, revealing that the issue could stem from a differentiation between Google Play and Google Books. He wrote:
Two footnotes: (1) The books were not bought books, they were Google Books scanned 19th century books, all of them *clearly* public domain; (2) I have since discovered that about 6 of the 40 are in fact downloadable, but there is *no* pattern — volume 2 of Middlemarch is downloadable, but not volumes 1 or 3 of the same issue. The error message is that they don’t have Google Play in my country. (Via BoingBoing)." They weren't books he'd bought. They were public domain books he had access to through Google books. Internet access to google Books from Signapore didn't allow access to those books. This might have been an error or some other problem, but it is valid for access to public domain books from Google Books to be limited to those areas where the books are in the public domain. |

The lesson to be learnt here is "don't update your apps when you're in a foreign country". As Paul notes, this had nothing whatsoever to do with ebook licensing - these were public domain books. Google Books is VERY heavily geographically restricted, even for public domain books; I generally have to use a VPN to download books from it from the UK.

There's an interesting article today in The Verge about preserving digital copies for archival purposes: http://www.theverge.com/2014/5/9/568...angered-ebooks

Well, I suppose, technically when you buy a paper book you are also only buying a licence. After all you still aren't allowed to copy it. That it would be harder to copy seems beside the point, the principle is the same.

wow that's odd, I thought you would just own it, not be licensing it

I think we should be able to do the same with ebooks. The problem as I see it, is the ability to sell an ebook and still keep a copy of it. That would be so very wrong. I wish there was a solution for that problem. |
