Public networks will fail by default. You can use the firewall application to open the ports for CC and Calibre. Or you can change your home network to Private if it's detected as Public. (Do NOT do this if you're not behind at least a minimal external firewall/router. Please.)

As for UAC - use it. There's a very real reason for it, and it's not that much of an annoyance.

getting there... but I digest these things slowly.

IF my PC is on a Home network, but my firewall says that my calibre install is allowed to talk to a public network - is that pass or fail ? I guess it must be a PASS because I have both boxes ticked, & it is working
do network discovery and file and printer sharing also have to be ON, in the windows network settings - that seems logical ?

PS I had terrible problems finding Calibre in the firewall programs exceptions list because Windows files it under "T" not under "C" . It files it as "The main calibre program"

Calibre, without CC can be used as a public network content server I assume ?

The private network rule is something that you have added to make the app more secure ?

I'm extremely happy with CC for Kindle Fire HD. but I do have one question that may have a simple answer. Books are sent by default to the CC folder established on the Fire. For this reason they don't show up under the native books library in the Kindle. That would be fine with me, and I could just use the Companion as my books app, clicking "read" from there. Except that my place in the book is not saved, even though I've been reading the book in the Kindle app. When, at the beginning, I tried to send the books to the Kindle's own books folder, I ran into a message later about it being a read-only file, if I recall. Can I move to the books from the CC folder to the books folder, and have everything work?

Windows knows three kinds of networks: Public, Private, Domain. Domain you don't need to worry about, that's for businesses or Geeks like me. Private means that you and Windows agree that you're behind a firewall OTHER than the Windows Firewall. (IOW, an external firewall, such as a wireless router.) Public means that you are:
  • Connected directly to the Internet
  • In a shared network environment where you don't trust those around you.
  • In a public place such as Starbucks or a Hotel with Internet access.
  • For some reason your PC has an IP address starting with 169.

Private can be "Home Network" or "Work Network" in Win7, but under the hood it's simply "Private".

Calibre can be a content server (web server) or simply a program running and connecting to a wireless device. When it's a web server, you're allowing it to be passive - anyone can connect to it and download whatever they want, assuming they can get onto the network to see it. However, if you use CC to connect to Calibre as a wireless device, it's exactly as if you were using a USB cable to connect. You use Send to Device and all transfers are initiated from Calibre, not CC.

I'm quite willing to use CC and Calibre in wireless device mode. I choose not to use Calibre as a content server, for a variety of reasons.

I don't have a Kindle Fire device so I don't know how helpful this may be...

I have 2 just-plain-android smartphones. On both of them I needed to set up CC to direct MOBI and AZW3 to the 'special' Kindle folder in order to be seen by the Kindle for Android app (CC Settings - Formats & Folders).

The special Kindle directory path is slightly different on my 2 devices,
/mnt/sdcard/kindle on the Galaxy Note 1 - android 4.0
/storage/emulated/0/kindle on the Galaxy Note 3 - android 4.3

Yes, as jackie_w states you can move the books to most any location on your device and have all future books for the format go there as well.

I'd love to find a solution that allows me to not have to reconvert to fix a books metadata, cover, etc., in the book.
calibre defaults to leaving the book as-is in the library, but will update all supported metadata in a book when sending to device or saving to disk.

Cover, btw, is only supported in EPUB/AZW3.

Polish Book will force calibre to update all that metadata on the copy inside the library as well. It only works on EPUB/AZW3, and will not even update title and stuff for .mobi and others.
Polish Book does not (by design) utilize plugboards.

Polish Book should only be necessary if you use Dropbox/calibre2opds/some other method of accessing the calibre library files directly. Or if you are using it's other functionality, of embedding a book jacket etc.

with Kindle fire, it's not that simple . sure you can put stuff in the books folder, but Amazon won't treat what you put there as "books", unless it sees Amazon ASIN & maybe other "proof-of-purchase" markers also within the books.
much discussion of this elsewhere on the forum

Same with videos. Amazon Kindle Fire thinks a video is something you buy from amazon, not something you add yourself.

Frankly, I no longer care,
If I need to sideload a video & play it with a 3rd party app, I have that figured out,
As for books, I've decided to transfer & read all sideloads as epub anyway via the Kobo app. I detest how amazon puts a azw/mobo book's cover back onto the carousel, every time you open it, & no matter how many times you remove it. Not only that, but if it does not like the cover dimensions it' puts an ugly blank rectangle onto the carousel instead!

Hmm. OK, I get it, I think, but where is this functionality located? How do I tell Calibre to Polish the book? (There are some times I really want to update the metadata on a book, even though I don't particularly intend to send it to a device right now. )

@CRussel - select book(s) in calibre book list, press 'p'

And/or add Polish Books to toolbars

He made no mention that he was using MoonReader+ Pro.

However it is in the Amazon app store. You might be able to load Bluestacks onto your PC then buy it from Amazon and move it to your Fire. Or use any other compatible android device and try transferring it to your Fire.

my mistake - i thought "+" meant "pro"

in fact- re checking the amazon app store.
i see moon+ reader - free - compatible with my kindle
then moon+ reader pro £3 - NOT compatible.

the latter seems to be corporate mis-speak ( what we call a lie in plain English )- if the free version works on a given tablet then surely the pro version would also work unless amazon have deliberately blocked it in their android code - they just don't want the competition, so they are blocking the sales & download ?

amazon store does not give a link for contacting developer ( unlike google store) . I may try to find one & the developer's take on this

PS I begin playing with bluestacks earlier in the week - but I could not figure out how to link bluestacks to an amazon app storeaccount ?

Mine is linked. I think all you need to do is install the Amazon App Store APK in Bluestacks and sign-on through the app.
