No idea, but it's also not just one genre. Some of these are samples, but there are lots of books sprinkled in:

Free today on Amazon UK - Panic (A Leopold Blake Mystery / Thriller) by Nick Stephenson

'Swift. Silent. Deadly.

Leopold Blake, expert criminology consultant for the FBI, had his weekend all planned out - and it didn't involve dealing with a murdered senator, a high-profile kidnapping, and at least half a dozen near-death experiences. Three politicians have been murdered in as many weeks, all expertly dispatched, and only Leopold can get to the bottom of it.

Unfortunately, as all hell breaks loose on the streets of New York City, he soon finds himself the next target of a powerful enemy who wants him silenced. Permanently.

Against the backdrop of political corruption and murder, Leopold and his team must fight for their lives to uncover the truth before it's too late. Panic is the first novel in the Leopold Blake series of thrillers, which can be read and enjoyed in any order. '

Free today on Amazon UK - Understrike by John Gardner

Boysie Oakes is back.
The suave, womanising special agent for British Intelligence returns in his second thrilling adventure.
At the height of the Cold War, Boysie is sent on a routine mission to America.
In San Diego, he will be the official British observer for the test-fire of America’s latest nuclear missile: The Trepholite.
But the Soviets have other plans.
A double of Boysie has been sent into the field.
And very soon Boysie is embroiled in a game of bluff and double-bluff involving a holocaustic missile, a slick con man - and Vladimir Solev, an deadly opponent and yet also a man in whom Boysie sees something of himself.
Along the way, Boysie is mixed up with two gorgeous women - the sultry Priscilla Braddock Fairchild and the luscious Chicory Triplehouse.
As he adventures across the United States, Boysie must dodge bullets, deadly predators and jealous women.
And as he arrives in San Diego the clock is ticking and Operation Understrike is under way.
‘Understrike’ is the second in the series of highly acclaimed spy novels featuring cowardly secret agent, Boysie Oakes. It is perfect for fans of classic British spy fiction, including Ian Fleming, Len Deighton, and Desmond Bagley.

Boyd Morrison's The Roswell Conspiracy is free again on Amazon US. Last time I know of was April 2013.

This is #3 in the Tyler Locke series.
http://www.amazon.com/Roswell-Conspi.../dp/B008TSWE72

Quote:
After the 1908 Tunguska blast levels a Siberian forest the size of London, a Russian scientist makes an amazing discovery amongst the debris.

In 1947, ten-year-old Fay Allen of Roswell, New Mexico, witnesses the fiery crash of an extraordinary craft unlike anything she's ever seen.

More than sixty years later, former Army combat engineer Tyler Locke rescues Fay from gunmen who are after a piece of wreckage she claims is from the Roswell incident. Incredulous of her tale, Tyler believes the attack on Fay is nothing more than a burglary gone wrong. But when he finds himself locked in the back of a truck carrying a hundred tons of explosives and heading for a top secret American base, Tyler knows that he has stumbled onto the opening gambit of something more sinister than he ever imagined.
...

In a desperate race against time, Tyler must unmask a conspiracy a century in the making to rescue the United States from electronic Armageddon.
Morrison's books are pretty entertaining-- a little short on character development for my tastes, but good high-speed thrillers.

Huh... while grabbing the link, I also noticed that Morrison's
The Loch Ness Legacy (Tyler Loch #4) is also free today (Amazon US.)

One Cold Night by Katia Lief
Kobo $0.99
Amazon.com $0.90

Quote:
New York Police detective Dave Strauss is haunted by the one case he couldn't solve. A schoolgirl vanished off the streets of Brooklyn, with only a trail of blood and a series of untraceable phone calls from "the Groom" hinting at her fate. Now the cold dark night has engulfed another young girl--but this time she is part of Dave's family. He and his wife, Susan, know fourteen-year-old Lisa has not run away, and they know her disappearance is not just a tragic coincidence. And once the first phone call comes, they know she's not alone....

Quote:
This short thriller is told entirely in phone texts.

A group of friends are hiking Mt. Rainier when something goes horribly wrong. At first it seems some members of the party suffered terrible accidents, but as the police recover their cell phones and begin to piece together their text messages, a very different story emerges.

For Mature Readers, contains some strong language.....

It says "while supplies last" (banner on the Kobo site about 2/3 down the main page) so I don't know how long this is good for, but Kobo has a "deal" right now where if you install the Windows 8 app you get a free copy of Robert Ludlum's The Janson Command by Paul Garrison. I just installed the Win 8 app and logged it into my Kobo account and sure enough the book appeared in my account. Was able to download an Adobre DRM'd copy from my library on the website just fine. As far as I know this offer is US only.

Kobo Aus* has David Ashton's

Shadow of the Serpent
$2.99 (and discountable)
Quote:
McLevy is one of the great psychological creations and Ashton is the direct heir to Robert Louis Stevenson' - Brian Cox, star of the BBC Radio 4 McLevy play

'David Ashton's writing is excellent, his characters thoroughly convincing, and his narrative grabs you . . . and doesn't let you go' - The Sherlock Holmes Society of London

'An intriguing Victorian detective story . . . elegant and convincing' - The Times

Known as the father of forensics and a likely influence on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, real-life police inspector James McLevy is here reinvented by David Ashton in a thrilling mystery, Shadow of the Serpent.

1880, Edinburgh, Election fever grips the city. But while the rich and educated argue about politics, in the dank wynds of the docks it's a struggle just to stay alive. When a prostitute is brutally murdered, disturbing memories from thirty years ago are stirred in McLevy who is soon lured into a murky world of politics, perversion and deception - and the shadow of the serpent.
* No doubt this book is around this price in your country as well

I thought this book sounded interesting and bopped on over to Amazon to check it out. I was going to have them send me a sample, but decided to check the customer reviews first. I found a one star review from someone who said, "After the 1st 2 paragraphs this book went straight to the trash heap where it belongs, not a book for a Christian to read!!". So instead I purchased it so that I can read it and provide an actual review of the book to help counter this type of nonsense.
