How's goes it with your covers? Reading to your g-d sound like a good excuse. Mine have grown up very nicely, but compared with a 4 year old... meh

Sorry - had to go out of town on biz for couple of days & did not see you last note re the status of the cover issue. Recognizing the three options could work differently for others this is my personal result.

1. Convert - Seems to work most consistently. Covers transfer to device & will add/replace a cover. If there is a double cover it can be removed by checking "remove first image." This will only remove inserted metadata
summary if the summary includes an image. (Box under "remove first image is never checked.") Calibre seems to supply a way to insert a metadata jacket by checking the box in structure detection. Leaving the box unchecked does not get rid of the jacket if the box is left unchecked. Downside to convert is it is more invasive & can take a long time to run so it's really not practical to use on a large book. Sometimes "hangs" @ about 47% for an overlong period of time on books over about 2mg & operation has to be stopped.

2. Modify - Covers transfer to device. Downside is "Insert/Replace Cover" often results in a double cover with a blank page between the two. I will then have to use covert to get rid of the second cover. "Remove Metadata Jackets" works inconsistently. (About 50% of the time.)

3. Polish - This would be the best option if the cover was successfully transferred because it is quick. When you view the log & open the book in Calibre it looks like all is well. However, the cover image is "grayed" out when the book is transferred. When opened on the device it looks like Polish had no interaction with the book despite what is indicated in the log.

I usually try Modify first because it is fast. If I get the double cover I then run Convert to get rid of it. This does not seem to have a detrimental effect on the book, it is just more time consuming.

In any case, thanks for all your help & tenacity. The test files were very helpful as they allowed me to test the results on my device using files created by someone else. The file you ran Polish on was properly transferred. My running Polish on your unpolished file resulted in no change to the file when transferred. While we still do not know why this problem is occuring, at least the device itself was most likely eliminated & the conflict lies elsewhere. Hopefully, that will spare some users the anguish of calling Nook tech support & being told to deregister/reregister their device. (Which does nothing to solve the problem & causes the loss of all side-loaded files.)

@seacity - I would go back to the epubs PeterT provided.

As I understand it, the epub he Polished is OK on your Nook, but the one you Polished is not. So I would open the two epubs in the Calibre Book Editor (press T) and eyeball them for differences. The Editor does have a book compare feature but if you're not familiar with the internals of EPUBs then. IMO, you'll be better off using your eyes - it's a minimal 'book' so differences should be obvious.

I would also seek to eliminate extraneous processes (eg Save to Disk, Send to Device, and Calibre Companion) by copying the epubs directly from my hard disk to the Nook's storage. It's not because I think any of them are the 'culprit' but the shortest path is usually the quickest when it comes to problem solving - it also removes nagging doubts.
