Some glitch with the Goodreads app doesn't have Lucifer's Hammer, by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, showing up on my 'Read' list, although when I search for it, it does come up, shows I've read it, and shows I've also rated it with 5 stars. That was another book I couldn't put down.

That's Larry Niven. One of their best books was Oath of Fealty.

The first book was meant to be a standalone book, but as it was so popular she ended up writing another Shetland mystery, and then another - until she had completed a quartet. It's been adapted for TV now too, so I guess it's just going to the the Shetland series 'cos it doesn't look like stopping anytime soon.

I've got the first in the series 'Raven Black', looking forward to reading it as the series seems to be very well reviewed.

I have Raven Black, too, in paperback, and I saw the TV adaptation of the second one. Must have missed the first one, but that's ok because I haven't read it yet.

There wasn't an absolutely outstanding book for me this year, but some excellent reads none the less.

New Authors (for me) and excellent reads!!
Sulari Gentill, A few Right Thinking Men
Sulari Gentill, Decline in Prophets
Sulari Gentill, Miles Off Course
Sulari Gentill, Paving the New Road
Mohsin Hamid, The Reluctant Fundamentalist
Robert Harris, Enigma
Robert Harris, The Fear Index
Andrew Martin, The Necropolis Railway
Louise Penny, Still Life
Louise Penny, Dead Cold

Continuing series authors - always great reads!!
Kerry Greenwood, Murder and Mendelssohn
Donna Leon, The Golden Egg
Michael Pearce, The Bride Box
Martin Walker, The Resistance Man
Jacqueline Winspear, Leaving Everything Most Loved

Non-fiction - Engrossing Reads
Christopher Catherwood, A Brief History of the Middle East
Sarah Helm, A Life in Secrets - The Story of Vera Atkins and the Lost Agents of SOE

I have to say that a lot of my year I was reading books to do with HTML5, CSS, PHP, SQL, MySql, Javascript, JQuery etc Yep - web design stuff and I'm currently sick of it! So any other reading was bound to be ab fab

I had two 5-star reads this year, and that is two more than I had last year! They are: An American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld, and Born to Run by Christopher McDougall. A five-star read must dazzle me as I'm reading it, AND have a satisfying ending.

Yes, I know I should tidy up my LibraryThing titles a bit for the 2013 reads. I'm glad I discovered Ann Cleeves. I have gone back and read some of her earlier, work, but I don't think is as good...

My only ***** novel was No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission That Killed Osama Bin Laden by Mark Owen. I was really, really, really close on A Dance of Blades by David Dalglish. ****1/2 stars if Goodreads had such a ranking.

I see what you are getting at, but then surely your are just using a 4 star rating system, as nothing will ever reach a 5? I think a recalibration of your rating system may be in order .

My 8 are:

Life After Life, by Kate Atkinson
Lolita, by Vladimir Nabokov
Stein on Writing, by Sol Stein
Kindred, by Octavia E. Butler
Pines (Wayward Pines #1), by Blake Crouch
Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story, by Arnold Schwarzenegger
Never Go Back (Jack Reacher, #18), by Lee Child
The Third Bullet (Bob Lee Swagger, #8), by Stephen Hunter

Back in #8, I wrote that my two 2013 five-star reads were available in paper only.

From a MobileRead standpoint, 2014 is already way better.

I just finished my first 2014 book. It's a five-star story of family love surviving all efforts to destroy it -- and an eBook:

Jung Chang, Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China
