I think cats like the warmth which your bum has left behind in the vacated chair!

Both ways.

The chair I want is occupied when I look for one and as you said, getting up for more coffee...

I don't have the foggiest notion what it's called, but we have a 1 1/2 person chair in the front parlor. It's microfiber and has a tall back, arms at the perfect height, and it's a recliner. There's room for me - which is about a person and a half, AND space for cats... Extremely comfortable and positioned properly so the stereo is properly balanced when in it..... It's one of the reasons I like being up in the middle of the night - can go downstairs, put on some baroque classical (Back, Vivaldi, compilation of John Williams on guitar) so it's JUST audible, plop with my tablet, and enjoy to quiet of the world while reading my current book...

I totally wanted a chair and a half (yeah, I don't know what else to call them either), but can't get one to the lower level where my reading area is. Just won't fit down the stairway. Yet a love seat does. Annoying, but I'm stuck with how things are assembled.

We were couchless for much the same reason. My solution was to buy from Ikea because of the flat pack boxes everything comes in.

I usually end up on the couch with a dog on each arm.

While a great idea, Ikea's furniture does not survive 300 pound men flopping into chairs. I also don't really like the fabric selection. Sadly, I spill tea and coffee now and then and the cleanup stains are really obvious on a solid or near-solid colored chair unless you have something leather like or dark. Dark doesn't work for me - I have cats with white fur and it just looks dirty all the time. The plush micro stuff that my sister has doesn't show fur...not sure why not, but they have not offered those recliners again at Costco.

Kennyc, one possible way round that problem is to buy your cats radiator-beds: the ones which you hook over a radiator and which have a kind of steel-framed cradle for the cats to sleep in.

Back to reading chairs ...

No radiators here, forced air heating. Cats are out of luck!

Oh, I have GOTTA get a couple of these! I knew there had to be a way to put the cats on the radiator but didn't know what it was called!

I've currently got two heated cat beds that sit right next to me, taking up 3 feet of desk space... The cats, of course, adore the things 'cause they stay at a perfect 102 degrees...

But the radiator bed would be greeted with great joy by the spoiled house princesses!

Oh, yes, heated cat beds were developed for elderly cats and cats with arthritis. They are very low voltage. My cats are only just starting to sleep in it after 7 years. They tend to want to sleep on furniture or in boxes, not the cat beds. Silly things. Also, on radiator beds, the plug in radiators that I saw in the UK are far different than the hot water radiators common in the US. They are simply too hot here. When I lived in an old building with radiator heat, I had to teach my kitties to stay away.

I still worry even if they're low voltage. As an alternative, I take a bag of rice, poke some small holes in it, heat it in the microwave, and wrap it in a cloth and put it in whatever place kitty has decided to curl up.
