Didn't B&N buy Fictionwise?

If so, I wonder if these updated versions are now also available from B&N? - and free, in your case.

Both the original and the new books are published by HarperCollins, but the layout's totally different. Different introductions, different layout entirely. The fundamental problem with the older ones is simply that I originally bought them as LIT files, and the tools that were available at the time to convert LIT to Mobi did a decent, but by no means a perfect, job. I paid so very little for them originally, though (they were bought in one of FW's amazing sales) that I don't feel at all bad about re-buying them.

My Fictionwise copies transferred over to Barnes & Noble, and I've re-downloaded from there. I think most of the problems have been fixed - I haven't noticed any errors recently.

If it isn't taboo to discuss this, I'd like to know, too. There are Wodehouse books at amazon-uk that I'd love to have, and an Alan Coren or two.

I suggest using a vpn set to England, then creating an Amazon UK account.

You do not need a VPN to use an Amazon UK account. I have one and do not use one.
You need a UK address and can use a hotel. You also need a Credit Card that will accept foreign purchases. I use an American Express card. Your email address needs to be different from your Amazon US email.

You can also buy Amazon.co.uk gift cards to purchase ebooks at your newly set-up Amazon.co.uk account:

1. Create a new Amazon.co.uk account, like Apache says, you need a uk address and can use a hotel. Use a different email address than your U.S. Amazon.com account. Then sign out of Amazon.co.uk.
2. Then use your U.S. Amazon.com account’s email and password to log into Amazon.co.uk, and buy an Amazon.co.uk gift card in the denomination you want (with whatever credit card you use in your U.S. Amazon.com account)
3. Gift that Amazon.co.uk gift card to the email you used to set up the Amazon.co.uk account in Step 1
4. Now you can purchase ebooks at Amazon.co.uk with that gift card in the Amazon.co.uk account you set up in Step 1
5. Repeat as needed

-->I think I got this info. somewhere on a Mobileread thread, and it worked fine.

For me the hard part is downloading the ebook since I have no Kindle or Kindle app. Amazon doesn't allow me to use K4PC with the Amazon.co.uk account.

Author Margaret Maron has put a couple of her books on sale for the month of December (first book in each series). These are traditionally published books where she'd bringing out the eBooks herself. $1.99 in the US, similar low prices at Amazon CA and UK.

Bootlegger's Daughter (A Deborah Knott Mystery) Amazon US | B&N | Amazon CA | Amazon UK
Quote:
Deborah Knott was expected to be a conventional little girl and eventually a conventional woman, worshipped on a pedestal by a conventional husband.

Instead, she became an attorney, infiltrating the old boy network that still rules the tobacco country of Colleton County, North Carolina. Some say her success is a sign of the New South, but no one knows better than she the power of the past—her family’s long history in the area is a major asset in her campaign for district judge. Then again, as the strong-willed daughter of Kezzie Knott—notorious bootlegger, ex-con, and political string-puller—history is also one of her greatest problems.

But it’s an episode from the more recent past that threatens to derail her campaign. As a teen, Deborah used to babysit little Gayle Whitehead for her mother, Janie. One rainy spring day eighteen years ago, both mother and daughter disappeared. When they were found three days later Gayle was dehydrated, dirty, and hungry...and Janie was dead. The unsolved murder became a local legend and an enigma that continues to haunt Gayle, who now begs Deborah to investigate.

With no real faith in her investigative skills, Deborah asks a variety of questions on her campaign tour of the county’s rallies—and soon her attention is distracted from the hurly-burly of politics by troubling new evidence. Deborah now faces the realization that the disadvantages of being the single female candidate in a southern judgeship race, and even the disadvantages of being Kezzie Knott’s daughter, are nothing in comparison to posing a threat to a successful murderer...

Winner of the Edgar, Agatha, Anthony and Macavity awards for Best Novel, “Bootlegger’s Daughter” was the first full-length novel featuring Deborah Knott.

One Coffee With (Sigrid Harald) Amazon US | B&N | Amazon CA | Amazon UK
Quote:
An award-winning mystery novelist and New York Times Bestseller, Margaret Maron uses her North Carolina background when writing the popular Judge Deborah Knott series.

But before Deborah Knott, there was Lt. Sigrid Harald, a homicide detective with the NYPD. Now, with the re-release of Maron's very first book, long out of print, new readers can finally get to know the character that started it all. In One Coffee With, we meet Sigrid for the first time when murder strikes the Art Department of Vanderlyn College. Who poisoned the deputy chairman's morning coffee? Everyone in the department had both motive and opportunity and it will take Lt. Harald’s cool, level-headedness to determine who the killer is before he – or she – strikes again.

Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine has said, "Harald is no stereotypical policewoman....Getting to know her is a pleasure;" while the San Diego Union-Tribune says, "Maron combines a lighthearted style, surefooted suspense, and a captivating cast."

I have a Macbook and a Windows PC, I have Kindle for Mac on my Macbook (for my Amazon.com U.S. account) and Kindle for PC on my Windows PC (for the Amazon.co.uk account). I buy some ebooks and get occasional geo-restricted freebies from my Amazon.co.uk account, but I can buy from both the Amazon.com U.S. account and the Amazon.co.uk account from my Macbook. Once in a while I download the Amazon UK ebooks into Kindle for PC on my Windows PC and import into Calibre (with the "tools") on the Windows PC and then transfer to a USB thumb drive and import into Calibre on my Macbook (where everything is). It only takes a couple of minutes to do.

If you have one computer, you could set up a Virtualbox Windows installation and have it all set up there. When you feel like downloading the Amazon.co.uk purchases it's easy to do so.

Okay, I thought I'd finally set up a UK account. I have a new account with an previously unused email address and an address in York, but every book I look at says "This title is not currently available for purchase" and "Pricing information not available" so apparently I've gotten something wrong.
