I have been even more surprised by the number of people in executive and government positions who only read when paid to do it. Luckily for me, other than initial moments of surprise I don't care who reads and who doesn't. I either like them or I don't and their are very few people I don't like to some degree or other. Most of my family reads, my sister doesn't except for the TV guide and the occasional scandal magazine. The only one I recommend books to is my mother. That is because she is 88 in another two days and can't think of the names of the authors she likes. Seems to remember the ones she doesn't like better. She has eclectic tastes and is easy to please though. She does extremely well with her kindle 3 but I am thinking to get her something nicer this year. Helen |

I use my old kindle keyboard to publish highlights of stuff I'm reading to twitter at the link below;
https://twitter.com/Ricky_Dangelo_ It's a useful feature whenever I need to refer to my notes/highlights of kindle books and don't have my kindle handy. Another neat feature is to read what other people have highlighted. |

Don't know yet. She's only 2,5. I am not one to recommend books to Dutch children as I only read English, sometimes German, and Dutch classics.

Maybe the following looks a bit pedantic, but I don't mean it like that. Hopefully you don't take it the wrong way. In my experience with older people, it often is not a success if you change things just because you think it's good to do it, even if the new device is better and your intentions are good. I've noticed it with my father, and several other people. It may be better to wait until your mom hits some sort of snag (reader too small, no front-light), which makes her *want* another reader. |

![]() I did get her the kindle when she was sure she didn't want one, and the fancy leather case which she also loves. She visits me and my sister (goes back an forth) for several months a year in the fall. I plan to tell her I have too many ereaders, not far from the truth and nudge her towards the newest one ![]() Helen |

Yes on Goodreads and here. Can't really publicize in a bus/train/coffee shop; nobody can see anything because I read on kindle. Not that I read those cheesy romance novels with an over-sized pecs guy and his wolf companion (yuck). I read fantasy and sci-fi. Nerding it out

I was using Goodreads, but have stopped since the Amazon purchase. Nothing specific against Amazon, but I did a lot of librarian work in addition to cataloging my own books, and I'm not going to do that same work for Amazon to sell it.
I'm slowly importing my shelves and reviews into Calibre. |

I occasionally post in the reading recommendations forum here on Mobileread, or I might discuss what I'm reading with someone in real life who I know has similar taste in books.
I like that with my ereader, it's not obvious what I'm reading if I'm in a public place. I have no desire to share with strangers. |

In principle, people being able to see the cover of the book you are reading can help you meet people with similar interests, it can be an ice breaker. On the other hand, there are people who use that as an excuse to intrude. "I see you are reading the latest book from John Doe. What do you think about it, and by the way, have you heard the good news about..."

I will participate in the "what are we reading" and "what are we listening to" threads here on occasion, but I have never felt the urge to put it in a signature line or go on facebook or twitter or other anti-social networking sites to broadcast it.

Reading the actual book, immersing myself in the story is a personal experience and I don't particularly want to be interupted. When I've emerged from the world of the story then I'm happy to talk about it...so no, I don't broadcast what I'm reading but I'm happy to review and chat about it afterwards.

I only recently started posting my current readings to Facebook/Goodreads. Most of my friends are big readers (most teach either English or Philosophy), so when I post that I've read X, someone will reply "If you like X, you should try Y."

I usually don't share with anyone what I'm reading, although if I come across a book that I really love I might share with some of my friends who I know have similar tastes and I think they might like it.
